Birthday Gifts for Kids

We have a first birthday party for a family friend's baby coming up. I have no idea what kinds of gifts a one-year old would be interested in (or more appropriately, what a one-year old's parent might want for their baby). I generally prefer something that is useful to the parents or fun for the baby, rather than some sort of keepsake type gift.

Any STMs or those knowledgeable about kids have good suggestions for a first birthday gift? Also, what is typical to spend on such a gift?

Thanks!

The amount depends on how close you are with the parents. For a 1 year old clothes are always a good option.

Clothes are a good one because I lot of the times about 9-12 million months is the largest they got at the baby shower and they are having to start buying them. If you want to go toy, anything with buttons that lights up/makes noise. A toy cell phone is a good one

Puzzles or an instrument (like a piano or xylophone) are usually good options!

DS loved the toy cell phone he got (it's a brand target carries with colorful packaging...b brand or something!) and also a useful gift would be toddler plate, bowl, fork, spoon and sippy cup. Also snack cups.

I always ask the parent if there's anything special their kid needs. If they dont give me any ideas I go with books or melissa and doug puzzles. Also no toys that make noise, your friends will thank you.

I've been a fan of those gyroscope bowls for awhile, I think they're pretty cool.

Haha, I was thinking the same on the toys that don't make noise. I was surprised on the suggestion on toys that play music or made noise. I figured if I went that route, our friends might dislike me (though the kid probably would love it!)

Clothes (get atleast size 18m...ask about size if possible), ride on car, books, puzzles. The age recommendations on toys are pretty accurate in my experience. If it says 2yr and up for example, the kid will likely not know how to use it or get frustrated with it.

As a parent, I say no to lights and noise bc they are annoying. Also, open ended toys are better than those that do the entertaining.
