Baby Names

NN for John?

Hey, ladies! I lurk here a lot and know you know your stuff. I need help! My DH and I have decided to name our son John. My DH and FIL are John and go by John. I'm wondering if there are any NN for it. I like Jack a lot, but Jackson is crazy popular and I know some boys will go by Jack. I don't love Johnny, but I know it's a NN. Any other thoughts?

There are so many Johns in my husband's family.  Many are John; some are Jack; some are even Jake because they need a way to keep them straight!

I suggested Jake to DH, but I wasn't sure if it was too out there or far fetched.

  • Maybe he can go by the initials of both his FN and middle name?  So If the name is John Robert, he could be JR?

    Also-- your dogs are adorable!

  • I have (no joke) at least 8 Johns in my family. Some go by initials, like JR, some go by first and middle name, like John James, some go by just middle name, and some use a variant of John: Jonny, Jay, or Joe. Plenty of options!
  • I like John-John for a little guy

  • I love John but I'm scared of the nn Johnny which I really don't care for.
What are you using as a middle name? Maybe you can call him by both?
I know a John Michael, John Daniel, John David, and a John Wesley that go by both names.

  • @jburdet1‌, his middle name is Bedford (family name). I've been calling him John Bedford just because I didn't know what to call him. I've thought about JB or Ford. I don't know. Just trying to gather as many options to see what seems right.

  • Jack or Jon-Jon
  • Thanks everyone! One other question about the NN Ford. I like that one, but without knowing it's his middle name, do you think people will think of the car company? I don't want it to sound like we have some crazy obsession with our truck. Lol

Sorry but yes Ford is all the vehicle brand and I think it sounds very country and all "I drive a big truck with a gun in the back window."

That's what I thought! We live in the south, so I feel like that's the first thing people would think.

  • I think JB and Ford are great nn options! Since Ford would be a nn, I really don't think it sounds like a truck obsession. It is an association, but not too much so.
  • I like JB or Johnny B. I personally don't mind the NN Ford, but it would be a lot of explaining to say that oh it's a NN for his MN...his actual name is John. haha

  • I like Ford as a nn because it is drawn from his mn. ( I thought of the President more then the truck..) or you could call him something to do with "The Third" like Trey........or name him John the Third and call him the name for John from your ethnic background ie if you are Irish call him Sean, French-Jean, Hispanic -Juan ect. Bottom line is, people will call him whatever you call him. I bet you will have very little explaining.
  • Jb or lj ? For little john. Nms but I don't mind Lj.

  • John Bedford is so dashing :) I'll echo what others have said-- I love Jack & Johnny. I think Ford is okay too.
  • Jack is the obvious nn, but I'd agree with Jay as well. I love both Jack and Jay!!!
