Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Normal follow up after natural MC

So I started miscarrying on Friday. I was nine weeks along, but at my ultrasound at 8 weeks, they didn't see a baby. Just a fetal pole and a gestational and yolk sac. Now over the weekend I had light to moderate bleeding a three quarter to half dollar sized clots. The nurse seemed to think that everything had passed based on that and they will just check my blood in the next few weeks to make sure my hug has gone down. It just seems like not much follow up to verify that everything had gone "well".

Re: Normal follow up after natural MC

  • First, I am sorry for your loss *hug*

Everyone has different experiences and with mine, even with the MC a bit earlier than yours, I had much more bleeding. Are you still bleeding at all?

My OB, in all 3 cases, wanted to follow up with me every couple of days to track my levels down to zero. I even had a couple of ultra sounds in between to make sure everything looked ok.

I'm hesitant to give any advice because some ladies may have experienced what you are but personally I wouldn't feel comfortable not getting my levels checked and having a follow up ultra sound.
I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

  • If it would make you feel better I would ask to go in to your doctor and get an ultrasound just to make sure. It wouldn't hurt anything. I'm sorry for your loss. Hugs!
  • I am so sorry for your loss.

Both of my losses were around the weeks as yours. Both were very different, so we cannot compare experiences. My follow-up to both was just checks on the level to watch it go down.

    Are you still bleeding?

An ultrasound isn't really needed. Odds are that everything passed (or will) on its own, and since they're going to follow hCG down then if it doesn't drop appropriately that would signify retained tissue. Unfortunately, OP, all you can do now is wait it out and hope it drops quickly so your body can begin healing.

    I'm so sorry.

  • Thank you all for sharing. I am still having moderate bleeding and mild cramping. Your thoughts make me feel better. Thanks.

  • I got the same follow up information. My OB office is going to continue to track my hCG until it is down to below 4. The offered an ultrasound if I wanted it, but I passed since I believe I passed everything. If my levels don't decrease then I will have to go in for further testing.

I've noticed that every office deals with things differently. I had high hCG levels and heavy bleeding and the doctor still wouldn't see me, but now that I've had a confirmed MC they are willing to do an ultrasound, where as other women call in about cramping and their OB sees them right away...

Sounds like your care is right on track though.

    Sorry for your loss!

  • The doctor called me back yesterday, and they are going to have me come in for an ultrasound once I've stopped bleeding. That makes me feel better. They'll also test my hug levels. Thanks for all you advice!
