Getting membranes stripped...does it hurt?

I thought I remebered hearing that it is quite painful.  Should I take some tylenol before I go?

  • More like uncomfortable and I spotted afterwards.

  • I didn't think it really hurt.  It was uncomfortable and made me a little nauseous, but it only lasted 30-45 seconds, and as soon as she was done I felt fine again.  It's nothing compared to labor.  Oh, and it worked for me.  Good luck!

  • It not comfortable at all.  They Tylenol probably won't help. It was more of the pressure sensation while having them stripped that bothered me. It's pretty quick so you should be fine. GL!
  • Getting a pap is more uncomfortable than stripping membranes.  Painful, no.  Fun, also no LOL

Ditto on the spotting.  Hope yours works better than mine did!

  • It sounds super painful.  I don't like that saying AT ALL!!! Good luck though!
  • I remember needing to rest after mine, it hurt a bit.  I bleed afterwards, it didn't induce labor either : (

  • Very uncomfortable but as soon as she was done I was fine.  My water broke about 8 hours later.

  • Couldn't even tell my OB did it w/ DD#1 - I was 40wks and went into labor 24hrs after that appt. No worse than an internal in my opinion, but I also never think internals are bad. GL!
  • I'm in the minority here. Mine REALLY hurt. Like, it brought immediate tears to my eyes. But I wasn't dilated at all, and he opened my cervix to 1 cm, plus it caused a very long contraction. I also had a little bit of blood. I am a very tough cookie, and I brought tears to my eyes immediately and I actually asked DH to leave the room while I was getting dressed afterwards because I needed a minute to compose myself.

  • Yes..I don't know if it hurts everyone but my cervix was very posterior both times and it killed.  I would take something beforehand.  Though thankfully it is only a few seconds and then the pain is gone.
