multi vitamin drops with flouride

At the 6 month check up yesterday our pediatrician prescribed DS multi vitamin drops with fluoride. Is this something all docs do?? I think it's because we just stopped breastfeeding at 6 months and he only gets formula now. The fluoride is probably because the water here doesn't contain it. I know I should have asked her yesterday but LO was having a meltdown and I was trying to calm him. I'm hoping she doesn't think he is deficient in some vitamin/nutrient. He is in the 28th percentile for weight and the 4th percentile for height which blows my mind cause he seems so chunky. I know not to read too much into that as long as he consistently growing he is fine. I'm gonna send the doc an email with my questions but also want to see how many other babies are taking them.

Re: multi vitamin drops with flouride

  • Many different schools of thought on this. They do need Floride, however it's very dangerous to over dose on Floride and that can be bad. So since a large portion of the population are morons lots of docs don't prescribe it because the benefits do not out weigh the risks. The current recommendations tend to lean more towards using a grain of rice sized dose of kids toothpaste to brush their teeth rather than drops. So a long winded answer to say it's probably not that they found a deficiency it's just something that was routinely done a few years ago, like vit. D drops. Just be careful with dosing and don't use a Floride toothpaste on top of the drops.

  • I knew about the fluoride being dangerous if your not careful with dosage. I'm comfortable with him receiving some type of supplementation for fluoride. I had and still have terrible problems with my teeth and I'm trying to very proactive about LOs dental hygiene. I don't want his mouth to become a money pit like mine my current dentist blames most of my dental problems on genetics and fear that I will pass it on to LO. So why the multi vitamin?? I have nieces one of which is 9 months and none of them were ever prescribed it. Just curious if this is common practice or just something our pediatrician does.
  • In my experience the only standard supplement is vitamin D.
  • My son takes them and my daughter who is 4 took the drops and now takes the chewables.
  • The real risk from fluoride is just discoloring of the teeth. It's not going to kill them or anything. That being said the benefits of ingested fluoride are kind of iffy from what I've seen. Some doctors are really into vitamins. I wouldn't think from that they think they're deficient in anything.

  • I'm sure I'm just paranoid it just seemed to have come out of left field. I'm just surprised that I have never heard of this being done before.
  • My dentist mentioned some kind of fluoride paste but I kind of blew her off. I haven't heard anything from LOs doc, though. If he mentioned anything, then I'll consider. He did perscribe vit D drops, which I haven't used yet. I suppose I will since I live in the north and it winter now.
  • Our pedi now has us using poly -vi-sol which is a multi- vit drop with iron. It also has the full dose of vit d. I'm surprised more pedis aren't recommending iron anymore. It sounds like it can be challenging to get babies enough iron in the diet after their supply from in the womb starts being depleted after 6 mo.

We're on a well so also don't have much Flouride in the water, but our pedi isn't worried yet. He had us test for it while I was pregnant to make sure we didn't have too much in the water, and it turns out we just have traces of it naturally. It is on my list for a follow-up question at our 9 mo appt.
  • If you look at the list of high iron foods it's easier than you think for kids to get it from their diet. On top of fortified foods stuff like peas and raisins are high iron. And blackstrap molasses is a great way to get iron.

IMO the only real supplement they need is vit d, and you can do that by supplementing mom if you're breastfeeding or using carlsons drops.

  • Please do not give children fluoride! It is more toxic than lead. Please watch this video from Ph.D. biochemist Paul Connett on the damage that fluoride does to a child's IQ --

Do not give your child fluoridated toothpaste, fluoride supplements, or any level of fluoride. Remember that fluoride is absorbed through the skin from bathwater, showers, and then ingested in toothpaste, water, and foods grown with fluoridated water. There is no way to control dosage!!!!
  • My doctor prescribed the Vit D drop and then at her 6mo appointment switched it for the multi vitamin with fluoride because we have spring fed water and they want to protect her teeth when they start coming in.
