Thanksgiving and Gestational Diabetes

Hey ladies! First, Happy Thanksgiving to all who observe the day! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, but there's this tiny GD issue that I have. If any of you have tried and true, low-carb/low sugar recipes, please share them. I'm specifically looking for a good mac & cheese (or a tasty alternative for it), candied sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce. Thanks in advance!

Re: Thanksgiving and Gestational Diabetes

  • I would say to eat small amounts of the things you love and just try to balance it out with lots of turkey. I had GD with my first but luckily it was not during the holidays. I was afraid of it being a problem with all the tempting holiday foods. I generally did pretty well if I allowed myself tiny amounts of the things I wanted but also ate a lot of protein and veggies to balance it out. You might be able to make cranberry sauce with stevia. I would think the sweet potatoes might be a challenge, but maybe try searching for low sugar recipes for that (there has to be some out there). I would think Mac and cheese in moderation would be ok, I know I ate pasta still when I had it. Good luck!

  • I hear ya, I've got to try and figure this out too. I've done well at home with just sweet potatoes with butter salt and pepper, and another that is kind of close is acorn squash. I had that last night with butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt. It was SO good. I pureed the squash though. I'll just be taking small helpings of my favorites and a fair helping of turkey. Usually my stomach gets full about the same time I've had enough carbs so I'll quit eating. And I will either skip taking my 1 hr reading after dinner or go straight to a 2hr. I've cheated a little bit before for special occasions and it's been ok so far. I've had GD since about 14-16 weeks. Baby's not getting to big
  • I plan to eat somewhat normal except for smaller portions of the carbs and larger portions of turkey, broccoli, carrots and a salad.  We also haven't had sweet potato casserole for several years now.  Instead my husband makes mashed sweet potatoes a tiny amount of brown sugar ( although we could try Splenda instead this year).  I will also probably take a nice walk afterwards too.

I talked to the nurse today after I sent in my numbers and asked about Thanksgiving.  She said that if your numbers are good for the most part, then one meal with number a little on the high side is ok ( I just need to make note of it on my sheet).
  • Yes I've been so super nervous about the holidays! Between my boyfriend and I, we visit three houses where the food is Mexican to soul food! I don't know how my readings will look, I just plan to it bits of everything but not too much bread,n sugar. We'll see how that works n good luck to you ladies forgot your GD this week.
  • In the same boat! Going to have tiny tastes of my favorites today instead of three helpings! It's going to be tough and I just have to hope my numbers are decent...they have threatened me with insulin if my numbers don't stay in range :(
  • My husband has type one diabetes and every year I make him a sugar-free pumpkin pie. I just sub the sugar with Splenda. It doesn't affect his blood sugars if he eats just a slice or two at a time. :) Happy Thanksgiving!
  • I say screw it. I'm not testing on Thanksgiving. My numbers are quite good on average and I am diet controlled. One day won't kill me or my baby.
