Formula Feeding

Water!

DD2 is due in a month and we've moved to an area where we can't use the tap water for formula (boiling won't help - the issue is high nitrate level). What's the healthiest bottled water alternative? It seems all "nursery water" has added fluoride and I've heard that that can stain baby's teeth. Perhaps just regular spring water? Or how about distiller water?

Re: Water!

  • We use a Brita filter, but according to their website they don't remove nitrates (this is the same for all filter types). I would say check out this link (hope that works) to the CDC, though I'll copy and paste the section about formula:

Can I use bottled water for mixing infant formula?
Yes, you can reconstitute (mix) powdered or liquid concentrate formulas with bottled waters, but be aware that the fluoride content in bottled water varies. If your child is exclusively consuming infant formula reconstituted with water that contains fluoride, there may be an increased chance for mild dental fluorosis. To lessen this chance, parents can use low-fluoride bottled water some of the time to mix infant formula. These bottled water products are labeled as de-ionized, purified, demineralized, or distilled, unless they specifically list fluoride as an added ingredient. For more information, see Overview: Infant Formula and Fluorosis.

  • There is nursery water that has no fluoride, but it's less expensive just to use distilled water. Our pediatric dentist said to use a combination. Some bottles with fluoride and some without. He also told us to check our formula, as some formulas have fluoride and some don't, and use water with fluoride if the formula doesn't have any.
  • Thank you all so much. I just asked DD1's pedi about it and she said if it's bottled water that isn't nursery water, then I have to boil it. Arghhhh. I used ready to feed with DD1, but that's just so costly.
