Can we talk about water?

Okay ladies, before this pregnancy I was not the biggest water drinker-just not a fan. Now however, I feel like I can't get enough! I'm talking about extreme thirst ALL DAY LONG. My question is...is there a point where too much water is a bad thing? Or this extreme thirst could be an indication of something else that should be addressed? I hadn't experienced anything like this during the first two pregnancies, so this is new. Any ideas? TIA!

You would have to drink an INSANE amount for it to be harmful. I don't think you are drinking that much. I mean to hurt yourself. Whats weird is before pregnancy I use to drink like a gallon of water a day, because of running and stuff and then when I first found out I was pregnant I wasn't drinking much and now I've been getting thirsty lately.

  • There are very extreme cases of drinking too much water. You can google it, but I wouldn't worry about it. If you're actually thirsty, then your body is definitely telling you it needs water. I'm the same way and not much of a water drinker. In the past, I even had to set alarms on my phone to remind me to drink water. Now, I'm a lot more thirsty. Just your body adjusting.

In between pregnancies, I've grown to love my "other" baby. The "carb baby", that's taken permanent residence in my belly, thanks to my overzealous love of bread, pasta and pastries. Hence my name. :)
  • I drink water everyday while I am at work. But I have noticed, especially today, that I just cant put my water down. I've gone through 3 glasses now.

  • I don't have too much insight for you but I can say that I have definitely noticed an increase in thirst as well. I don't drink much water normally so I figure my body just needs it more now that I'm pregnant. So far as I know, you need to drink a Lot of water before it becomes dangerous to your health. If you're peeling frequently (which I imagine you are) then you should be ok. Follow up with your doc just to make sure.

  • Thanks ladies! Just going from one extreme to the other seems so crazy! But such is pregnancy, right?
  • It's funny you say that because I wasn't really a water drinker either, but since I've been pregnant I drink it all day and keep a tall glass by my bed for when I get thirsty at night.

I think you're doing great and don't need to worry about a thing. It sounds like it's what your body needs right now! :)
  • I thought I was gonna die last night in the shower....because I wanted water so much lol. Crazy water craving lol. There is this phenomenon called water loading, but it applies to addicts and mentally ill people. They drink insane amounts of water and basically achieve the same effects as being drunk due to the electrolite imbalance. Stay hydrated, and don't worry - you are most likely far away from being a loader.

  • I drank a lot of water before becoming pregnant and I hadn't noticed a change...but today I'm SO THIRSTY. I'll down a bottle and I'm still thirsty and want more!

  • @cookiesandwine‌ - I Am ALSO avoiding that water! Haha
  • My OB told me I should drink a gallon of water a day. Not that that's happening...I try, water just isn't my fave. I might be weird, but water at room temp is more tolerable to me than super cold water. I can only take tiny sips if it's super cold.
  • You might be dehydrated. With my first pregnancy I was drinking a ton of water and I was constantly thirsty and had a dry mouth. I continued to tell my doctor about it and all she said was drink more water! I was furious! So what ended up happening was that I was not absorbing any of the water I was drinking. It was just going right through me. So at time of delivery I was so dehydrated that they had to bring in the ultrasound machine to get an IV started and gave me 2 bags of fluid. So if you really do feel like your thirsty and you can't quench your thirst then I would make your doctor listen to you.
  • Drink that water, my dear. I've been super thirsty too! I feel like I have dry mouth 24/7. I drink about a gallon of water a day and have noticed that it makes me feel so healthy. My skin problems have cleared up too.

  • I'm in the same boat. I've never drank much water before I got pregnant but I wake up in the middle of the night feeling like I'm in a desert!
  • I'm so jealous of you ladies!!! I am so very thirsty all the time, but water instantly makes me vomit :( I try to force myself to drink a gatorade each day since I know I'm not getting enough fluids, but sometimes I can only get through half a bottle
  • I was never a water drinker. Today I went and bought a CASE of water and stuck it under my desk. I don't even like it but I feel dehydrated.
  • as long as you aren't drinking gallons of water a day you will be fine. your body needs more fluids for baby. right now your body is busy making more blood to sustain a pregnancy... most of blood is water!

  • I'm having the opposite problem. Before pregnancy I loved water and now I cannot tolerate it. I've tried room temperature, with lemon added, with/without a straw...etc. The only form I can tolerate is ice :(

  • I used to love water, but the thought of drinking it now makes me nauseous. I force myself to drink some but most of the liquids I drink are considered clear
