Just wondering when your first appointment is with your ob? My family doctor said they don't take you till 28 weeks and that seems like a long time.

Re: mom's from ontario

  • I'm in Toronto and I saw my OB at 10 weeks. But every doctor is different

  • I'm in Orange County and I saw mine at 7weeks
  • I'm in Toronto and mine takes patients at the 3 month mark and no sooner.
Doctors are pushing for shared care more and more. Which means you see your family doctor until 28wks and then transfer to an ob. I turned down this option.
  • Im doing shared care with my family dr and a group of family doctors who do deliveries (mine does not). I alternate appointments with each party. So I had my first app at 9ish weeks with my family doc, then I meet with the other group (most likely a family med resident) Dec 15 for my 14ish week appointment.

Like pp have mentioned, every doc is different but a lot of OBs don't elect to see you until the end of 2nd tri, because Family docs are more than qualified to do prenatal care. This frees up the OBs to focus on deliveries (and more Indepth end of term appointments).

A pro of seeing your family doc for longer is that there is less chance of them having to cancel/reschedule an appointment because of having to leave for a delivery.

  • I was a little different. I knew almost right away I was pregnant. Went in for full testing with HCG two weeks along - had one ultrasound at 4 weeks because of heavy bleeding (all normal though) and one ultrasound at 6 weeks. regular hcg screens by my regular doctor over the last few weeks. see my ob next week and he will refer me for ips screening then. next u/s is likely at 18 weeks or so I am told.
  • I'm doing tandum with dr and ob
I live 4 hrs away from where I will give birth (where the ob is) so the dr here is hoping that he will see me for regular apts and then I won't have to travel as much in the winter
  • I see my Dr until 20 weeks, and then get transfered to an OB

  • I'll be 18 wks this time when I meet my OB, I was in Toronto last time and I think I was 32 before I met that one.
  • I'm with a midwife and they wanted us in at 9w. Totally depends on where in Ontario you live and the preference of your family doc. Mine seems to like sending me to specialists for the littlest things so with her I would be seeing an OB after my 10w appt.

Just clarifying. You're with a midwife and an OB? If so, I'm just curious if there there is a reason?

Most people I know that choose the midwife route, do so as an alternative to OB.

  • I'm in the GTA and see a midwife. Because my delivery last time was very complicated I will be seeing an OB sometime around 24 weeks to discuss if I need to just go with a c section this time. If it weren't for that I would stick with my midwife the whole time.

Just a midwife. If I had gone the OB route the I would have seen the OB at 10 w as that's how my family doc prefers to do it. The only time that I would see an OB is as a consult if my midwife was concerned about something. That happened with DD as I developed pre-eclampsia (and it turned into a transfer of care to an OB until after delivery).

  • Oh ok! That makes sense. Thanks for your replies ladies.

I'm being delivered by a family doc group, but like @trapdoorsteph‌, will have to see an OB sometime in second/third tri (also because I had a c-section with my DS) to discuss the risks/benefits of VBAC (which I'm hoping for this time around)

  • Toronto! Mines next week at 13 weeks. Special pregnancy program at Mt. Sinai.
  • @tachycardicdoll I delivered DS at Mt. Sinai. I was with the Family Health Team, but I ended up with a c-section, so I was transferred to OB. They're great there!

  • @mccall35‌ was it the special pregnancy program? I had my first child (angel now) there 11 years ago... he was born with a heart defect. I have to say I feel like I'm doing this all over again for the first time. How long ago did u deliver there?

I was not in the special pregnancy program, but everyone I encountered was lovely. I delivered there March 2013. They have a brand new mum and baby floor (post delivery), it's really nice!

  • I don't see the delivering doc until 28 weeks. (Not an ob just a family doc who does deliveries.) Till then I'm with my regular family doc.
  • @mccall35‌ thanks! I'm excited for my first obgyn appointment there on Wed. :)
  • I'm in Toronto with a midwife and they wanted to see me as soon as possible because I was unsure of how far along I wa. I ended up only being 5 weeks when they started seeing me, so we continued as normal. Already had 2 appointments and a dating ultrasound with them - going for my 12 week ultrasound this Tuesday and a follow up appointment the next Wednesday, and she calls me once a week to see how I'm doing. I couldn't imagine having to wait 28 weeks :-O

Correct me if I'm wrong ladies, but I don't believe they are waiting until 20+weeks to see ANYONE. They are being followed by their family doc (or clinic of somesort) AND receiving prenatal care from them (I.e routine appointments, testing, referrals for ultrasound etc). Until they will be transferred to their OB/doc who will be delivering. These ladies (at least I hope) are receiving all of the same prenatal care as you and I.

Yes.  Care with regular doc until that point. I believe most places want to see you around 10 weeks for the first appointment.

  • I saw my GP right away. Dating u/s around 8 weeks... I've had a few u/s and now going to Mt. Sinai for my first obgyn appointment on Wed. Whoever makes you wait until after 20 weeks should be fired... or shot. Or both
  • just curious for those Ontario moms who are not seeing an OB until closer to 18-20+ weeks: is your GP/Midwife sending you for your bloodwork and NT screens instead?

  • Guys, read the above posts. The people who are waiting/have to wait to see their OB/delivering doc ARE getting their prenatal care from either their GP/midwife/what have you. I'm pretty confident no one is waiting until 20 weeks to get basic prenatal care (including bloodwork/screening/ultrasounds).

My DH is a family physician, who doesn't do deliveries, but has many many prenatal patients he sees until end of second tri, when they have a transfer of care to OB/delivering docs.

The very practical reason a lot of OBs wait to see patients until later in prgnancy, is because they spend a lot of time doing actual deliveries/dealing with end of pregnancy complicated care. As a result they often have to cancel prenatal appointments/clinic days.

Since all GPs are more than qualified to do early prenatal care/refer for testing etc, from a logistical perspective it makes more sense to have them do the early pregnancy prenatal appointments as it helps to lighten the clinic day of their OB counterparts (and reduces the chance of your routine appointment being cancelled-because your OB is deleivering a baby.)
