My blue heeler mutt digs and scratches and licks and chews at his back basically non stop! He's only three and he has patches of hair missing from his back. I can't find fleas, I don't see any other kind of mite or bug and my husky doesn't do this so I'm 99% sure it isn't a bug or anything like that. I gave him a bath in dawn dish soap because I've heard that helps with dry skin and I'm just at a loss. I feel so bad for him! He seems so upset when he's scratching and it's awful to watch.
Any advice? My mom suggested raw egg in his food? I've never heard that before but she says it'll help. I'll obviously take him to the vet if he needs it but if it's just dry skin and something i can do for him at home I don't want to take him because it traumatizes him.. I have to carry him in and he cries and tries to bolt, it's awful.
I don't know if titles actually tag so
@DebateThis And anyone else who has suggestions or their dog has done this before.
It's gotten significantly worse the last 4-5 days. I haven't been letting him scratch himself raw for months!
And for your time, a picture of my first baby. ( :
Re: @debatethis I need doggie advice.
I know most vets won't write a script unless the animal has been seen recently, not sure if they have a recent record for your pup and they could write a script for something to try out, and then if it doesn't improve bring him in.... Hope he gets relief soon
I would actually suggest a systemic (oral) flea med like Comfortis instead of Advantix since many strains of fleas are resistant to the topical stuff and w/ all his licking he could ingest some of the topical stuff. We've used Comfortis for years with great success.
If you can eliminate fleas the next thing would be environmental or anxiety, but fleas are probably the most likely scenario. Good luck!
@wedding06 I'll try that tonight. I'll wake up to him scratching and biting so he's not sleeping well.
