DS is 3 yrs. 4 mos. He is doing fine peeing on potty. He pooped on it once but hasn't since. He asks for a diaper and so far we would just put one on him so he could poop. Otherwise he holds it. I have been telling him we are almost out of diapers and I am not buying more. How do I encourage him to go? I know this can be common but don't want to drag it out and afraid if I don't offer the diaper for poop we will have bigger issues. A friend of mine has a son who will hold it for days and has been getting sick, etc. due to it.
Two things. First, is he using the big toilet or a kiddie potty? My daughter was potty trained on the big potty, but freaked out anytime her poop made the water in the toilet splash up. We solved that by putting some toilet paper in the bowl to "catch" the poopies. She thought it was funny to try to get poop to land on the toilet paper. Ridiculous, but true.
The second thing we did was bribery. She would get a sticker for every time she pooped on the potty. Put them on a chart, and every time she got 10 stickers she would get a new book or small toy.
It will come with time, he will eventually poop on the potty. :-)
I had trouble with my first son (probably because I pushed the issue so much). I started using a potty book and giving him stars, after 3 stars he could have a treat. This worked well for him.
Remember every child is different, my 2yo just started pooping on the potty when he was ready, I didn't even try to train him. It WILL happen, just be patient and do what you can to help.
I had the same problem, my son was used to standing up while going in a diaper! So of course sitting is something getting used to. I had him sit for a while and gave him something to distract him whether it was a book, or even my phone to watch a video, so he'd relax and then finally be able to go.
We started potty training just after DS turned 2 he took to going peepee really fast and even telling us 'peepee-potty' but pooping took much longer he wasn't one to hold it in either he would poo through his shorts/pants or on in his under-ware ..we used tidy-whities in the house so he can get use to just wearing regular underpants- needless to say I have had to throw away some of these bottoms and have even found lil poo balls on the floor.. (ugh the joys of PTing) anyways it really took keeping an eye on him and noticing wen he would start pushing in the diaper and pick him up to run and pupu in da potty.. I never did the bribing with stickers or candy and he never wanted to sit and wait it out but what I did was make a big deal like..saying Yeah!! pupu potty and clapping hands and dancing and singing like a little celebration for every time he went and the reward was of course flushing he also like to get one piece of tp to brake apart and wash it flow away with the poo and he also makes sure to say bye-bye poo-poo.. its what worked for us.. but all in al it really just took time.. lots of time and patience.. I also gave him the option to use his potty or the big potty which he chooses most of the time making it that much easier for me.. Good luck!
Thanks for this thread, my 3 year old is going pee pee no problem but refuses to poop in the potty. I don't know if he knows to recognize when it's coming. Could that be the issue?

Im sure it could be although I think by 3 they have a good sense. I have heard several theories about this, one that may sound strange but have heard over and over,;sometimes kids feel like they are losing a part of their body so thats why. Who knows if its true. But on a good note, we know they will all eventually do it. I was moreso, looking for some tips from moms who went through this. We are still dealing with this issue since I posted this awhile ago.

Yes, I try the potty choice too of the big one or small one. Of course the few times he did poop he used the little one which is messier to clean. Thanks kid. lol
DD held poop too for a long time. We just kept telling her that it's okay to poop in the potty (she wouldn't poop on the toilet), and we used rewards when she did poop on the potty. She got it eventually. Just keep reminding your LO where poop is supposed to go.
Have any of you parents experienced your child doing really good with peeing or pooping in the potty or big toilet and then all the sudden out of nowhere your back to square one because they have regressed? What is that all about? I am dealing with that now. My son was doing pretty good with peeing and letting us know when he had to go but now you'd think we were torturing him when I make him go sit on his potty.
When I am dressing him in the morning or right before bed, I make him go pee which he usually does with no problem. I also make him pee before getting his bath. Sometimes he goes, sometimes he doesn't but he tried and thats the main thing. I try to make him pee first thing in the morning when he wakes up. He tends to be defensive but I explain to him that the pee has been inside all night and now it wants to come out. I am always coming up with a silly story to tell and help illustrate my point! LOL!
He's only pooped one time and to my surprise he did it all by himself. When I walked into the bathroom he had already pulled his pants down and was sitting on the big toilet and was dropping "bombs" in the water! LOL!!!! I think we celebrated a while that night! HA!!!!
I started training my daughter last week. She has been accident free for 4 days with pee but refuses to poop in the potty. She poops in her panties and it's messy but I don't know what what to do. When I see her about to poop I try to get her on the potty but she freaks the hell out. She told me she's scared to poop on the potty. I've tried bribery but nothing works. My nephew had a horrible time pooping and ended up at the doctor and hospital several times bc he was so backed up so I don't wanna scare my daughter into constipation. I hear this is a very common problem. Sorry not advice but you are not alone!

A friend of mine suggested (when my daughter was doing the same) to ask
DD to have a try on the potty instead of telling her to go to the potty.
DD is all about control, so if we tell her to have a "try" instead of
telling her she "has" to use the potty or "needs" to use the potty,
she's usually more willing to cooperate.
The other thing with DD
is that when she poops, she doesn't want us in the room. For pees, she
doesn't care, but for poops we put her on the potty, then leave her
alone with the door halfway shut, and tell her to call for us when she's
done. Doing these things seems to help her have some of the
independence that she's constantly fighting us for.
We started off with potty seats on the big toilet and using the tablet or DVD player for entertainment.. progressed onto a rewards bucket which he got something every time he went Pee ... he still pooped in diapers to begin with.. then after a couple of weeks we slowed down on the rewards bucket and were using stickers.. I made a special chart with two rows for pee .. two for poop so he could choose his own rewards.. ours were McDonalds or chocolate for filling up a pee row and toys r us or a matchbox car for pooping,. the deal was one for peeing and one for pooping and one if you came and told us you needed to go pee or poop.
It's working out great... we don't push the potty training thing and decided to go at his pace.. he went through a phase of only peeing on pot.. then only pooping on pot .. now he is doing both. soon as he sits down he points to his chart LOL
We bought a bunch of sticker roll packs at Toys R us .. his latest is minions.
We still have the odd accident but that is usually overnight when he has a diaper on and it just fails because he sleeps late and it gets over full.
Patience is the key ... find something that works with your lil guy...I can tell you that in the beginning it wasn't unusual for me to spend an hour or two each time sitting on the side of the bath till he either pee'd, or said he was done. Then when he started getting the hang of it we kinda started an unofficial time limit so when he didn't go, we said no problem we'll try again in a bit.. Now he goes almost instantly 99% of the time. Even when he is in pull ups if we were going out or just got home.. he will ask to go potty. The other day for the first time he actually asked to get out of the bath to go potty.. usually he takes great joy in saying he doesn't wanna pee, then gets in the shower and pee's on his toys... kids !! lol
I just made my chart in Word with logos he knows and table cells.. nothing special... then laminated it so it was reuseable. In the beginning it was 5 for a reward but we extended the Poopin one's to 10 for bigger rewards.. you could change rewards each time the chart fills up if you want to keep it interesting.
Good luck.. don't stress it .. they can go from 0-60 in the potty training.. lol In the beginning it seems like you never will get there..and then bam something clicks for them.

A friend's DS had the same issue and she told him the potty really wanted his poop. She did a voice and said "Please, poop! Come in here!"
