How would you pronounce Tereu?

I have a strong feeling you guys will come down hard against this name, but I love Tereu. It is the name of a band we love, and I always thought it had such a pretty ring to it. So yeah, it's a made-up name.

So... in the early stages of name picking I want to know:

Would you think Tereu was a boy or girl's name?

How would you pronounce it? (I have a pronunciation, but want to know what others would automatically assume)

Actually, it is not made up. From what I can find, it is possibly the Catalan and Portuguese form of Tereus, who in Greek mythology raped his wife's sister "then cut her tongue out and held her captive so she could never tell anyone." Masculine.

    I would say /TEHR-oo/.

@bromios is the Greek mythology god and would know more. This was just from a suick good search.

OMG that meaning is TERRIBLE. Please, someone, give me better news!

That is very similar to how I would pronounce....

Tear-oo, rhymes with Aunt Beru from Star Wars?

I honestly have no idea what sex a Tereu would be.

I don't see the appeal and guessing boy.

hahah yeah, it's looking really bad ladies. Oh, man!

I pronounce it Tr-ooh (Kind of like if you made the word true into two syllables). And was thinking for a girl!

I also like Astoria and Elodie for a girl.

For a boy I'm much more traditional... We're thinking Gordon Henry (in honor of DH and my dads).

Yeah that's not a good name. What about Aurelia?
I like it.. But I think I like Aurora better.

True as a middle name? Elodie and Aurora are both lovely.
That would be very pretty! May do a family name for the middle, but I'm going to add that to the ideas. Thanks :)

Ha, I like you, OP.  You're very open to hearing our honest answers.  That's awesome.

I really like Elodie.  I like Melody, Melanie and Elowen more, but hey!

I want to like Astoria.  But, all I think of is the Waldorf-Astoria and then I feel like this is a bit like naming your baby Bentley, Diamond or Chanel.  So, hrmm.

Asteria (similar) is a Greek mythology name.  It means "starry," which is lovely.

Gordon Henry is nice.  I'd prefer Henry Gordon.
Yeah, I kind of like Henry Gordon better as well... but Henry is so popular now, and Gordon is DH's dad so he's feeling sort of patriarchal about it. We'll see!!

Asteria is very similar sounding and I love the meaning! Thank you. I think I'm drawn to Astoria mainly b/c of the potential nn- Story. But I also hate it when people name their kids simply for the potential nn.

DH liked a Melody before we got together, so that's definitely out ;)

I would say it like tehr-oo, and I would assume it was a boy's name.

I wouldn't try to pronounce it because it is awful for a kid and mythologically speaking... a disaster as others have covered.

You have so many other GREAT ideas, don't chase this one. Only chase dreams and whiskey.

The others have covered how bad Tereu is. I like Henry Gordon a lot better.

Story is one of my GP names, so I love it, but I can't get past the hotel reference with Astoria.

I like Elodie, but I love the suggestion of Elowen.

If I saw it on paper I would assume it was a boy and try "tear-roo" first, with the expectation that that is totally wrong. I would also assume he or his parents were not native English speakers.

Don't give your kid a name that no one will ever be able to pronounce. And the only association is a greek mythology rapist. Perhaps there are other bands you like? :)

Henry is popular because it's a lovely name. In 2013 there were 8802 Henry's born out of 2,000,463 births. So that is 0.4% or 4/1000. 1 out of 250 boys born were named Henry. When you think of that way, it is really not all that popular at all and he will likely be the only one in his class and the only one his friends know. He won't have to spell his name out or anything.

I don't love your girls choices but would suggest Astrid, Daphne, and Ariadne.
