Help- UTI question

So my dr leaves me a msg saying my prenatal urine sample/labs indicates I have a UTI and she called me in a prescription to take and said it is important to treat especially in pregnancy.

I've had a UTI or 2 in the past (before preg) and always had UTI symptoms and knew that's what it was. This time I don't have those symptoms oddly but of course I trust the lab work. I'm a little worried this could be bad for the pregnancy/baby but too afraid to google about it.

Anyone else get a UTI while preg? Should I be concerned about anything?

It's fine as long as you get treated. I take asidophalus every day to help keep them away since I hate yogurt.

I take a probiotic every day without fail but apparently that didn't prevent it from happening

Hey TQ- I had the same thing. UTI with no symptoms. I was on an antibiotic for 10 days and am waiting to hear if it is cleared up. The dr assured me it is not serious as long as they are caught and treated quickly. Hang in there!

I had an infection and had no symptoms for weeks. As long as you take the meds you should be ok

I'm a frequent flier for UTIs, although I haven't had one yet this pregnancy (knock wood). I've gotten very good at prevention. I actually thought yogurt was all about year infections, not UTIs, but I could be wrong. Cranberry extract is the typical go-to prevention, bit talk to your doctor. Sorry you're dealing with this, but don't worry about the antibiotics.

And be glad you're symptom free, as those symptoms SUCK!!!

@pblge yes the symptoms of UTIs usually are terrible! Hoping I can nip it in the bud before any bad ones show up. Are you taking cranberry pills? I used to take those but wasn't sure if I could during preg. Seems like it's just concentrated cranberry so I don't see why it wouldn't be safe.

I get them so often that I actually take a prescription preventively (macrodantin). My OB said to keep taking it instead of the cranberry bc it's thought to be more effective. Not sure what they would tell other people. :-/

You could also drink cranberry juice everyday. I got a UTI a few times when I was younger and the doctor recommended drinking a cup of cranberry juice every day. I can't stand plain cranberry juice so I subbed crangrape...I drink it every day still to this day! Get the 100% juice kind. Haven't had a UTI for as long as I can remember (knock on wood)!

Pure cranberry juice is ROUGH, not to mention expensive, but they say the blends aren't effective. This is why I personally switched to the pills or chews. Even with my prescription I always have some of those with me. If I feel the tell tale twinge I'll pop a couple, then repeat as needed.

Thanks everyone! My dr responded with taking cranberry pills is safe so I'll be doing that too and probably for the rest of the preg

This was a timely post for me to see today. I'm going to the doc at 9 tomorrow morning with what I think are UTI symptoms. BLAH! Hope yours clears up soon!

The reason urine is screened routinely in pregnancy is because it isn't uncommon to have asymptomatic bacteruria...or, in English, bacteria in the urine without symptoms. It's because of the high levels of progesterone that relax all the smooth muscle, including that of the urinary tract. Bacteria from the "general vicinity" get into the bladder, don't really cause symptoms, but can manage their way all the way up to the kidneys. Then you're in a heap with major infection. So screening is routine and treatment is straight forward. For women with a history, cranberry helps to keep bacteria from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract, making it harder to establish an infection. Macrobid is a go-to drug in pregnancy, followed by Bactrim (sulfa-drug). Good luck!
