Cloth Diapering

best bottoms?

Is anyone using Best Bottoms? Do you like them? What type of insert do you use? Is it true that they can fit earlier than most one-sizes?

Thank you!

Re: best bottoms?

  • I started using them when ds was about 10 pounds with the medium inserts. The shells could have gone smaller so I would say yes they fit sooner than most OS diapers. However with nb runny poop, you'll need more shells if you use the inserts rather than prefolds or flats or fitteds. The shells do make excellent covers with any of those options btw. I changed to using flats when ds outgrew the inserts I had.

My story is pretty much the same as above, except my LO hasn't outgrown the medium inserts we have but we don't use them. I find I'm getting repelling issues with them (stay dry ones), I am just not a fan of microfiber, too hard to clean for my routine that works for everything else. And both my husband and I just prefer prefolds snappied for the runny poop, or pad folded flats for most of the day with just pee diapers.
That said, I really like the covers, they are great quality and work great over prefolds or flats. I like that they have an extra row of rise snaps that most OS covers don't have, and the double gusset. They aren't my favorite cover (which would be Blueberry Capri) but for the price they are awesome, and their prints are awesome.

  • I love my BBs! I started using them with P when she was 8 lbs. I was using flats and prefolds then. I switched to bb inserts, but like PP said, nb poo will get on the covers. That was fine with me since I have all.the.bb.covers!
With my toddler I use the bb inserts too. Stay dry during the day, a doubler plus a cotton/hemp insert.

  • We use them with the hemp/cotton inserts. We skipped medium size. Love them :-)

  • I like the covers they are good quality, but they're too small for giant baby, now.

  • It makes me LLOL that flats are a common thing on this board now
Washing a flat is a stupendous thing. It's just so easy! Knowing that I have very hard water, I just have no interest in fighting any battle with a MF insert. And spraying a pad folded flat is so much easier than spraying out the gussets of a pocket or AIO.
You don't have to sell me on it. Flats overtaking the cd board has been my plan this whole time. Bwahahahahahahaha!!

Just because you were right about the ease of washing flats vs the convenience of snap in inserts......

  • BestBottoms have 4 rise snap settings and can get pretty small.  We started using them at about 2 weeks (maybe could have used earlier, but I was concerned about cord stump with all the bulkiness of the folded over layers and crossed-over tabs all in the front).  BestBottoms are stiffer than many covers because they are made with 2 layers of PUL.

We didn't get a good fit with any of  our OS pockets until about 1 month (BG pockets fit fairly well then) and some OS pockets/AIOs didn't work well until more like 3 months.   The only OS diapers we've tried that fit earlier would be Softbums (they have adjustable elastic and get really small, we put on an Echo with the mini pod insert the first day home from the hospital and it looked as good as or better than our NB diapers).

We've used both the MF stay-dry inserts and the hemp/cotton blend inserts and like them both.  I think they have similarly absorbancy but the hemp/cotton inserts are trimmer/thinner for the same absorbancy.   The hemp/cotton ones are topped with a hemp/cotton fleece but are not truly stay-dry, but I've used the regular hemp/cotton insert with an overnight hemp/cotton insert and not had the same wetness redness that I would get with regular cotton prefolds/flats or natural fiber fitteds (I have to use fleece liners with anything else natural fiber for overnight).   The main downside to the hemp/cotton inserts is they take the better part of forever to dry.

  • I only have the stay-dry inserts in medium. They have been great for my DS who is about 20 lbs. now. The absorbency seems fine for him so I don't think I will buy the larges. I started using them in my diaper bag because I had two in diapers, one 2 years and 20 lbs. and the other 3 months and 11 lbs. and got tired of carrying a whole bunch of different diapers. The covers look like they get just as small as my other newborn diapers, so I am anxious to try them with my next newborn.
  • I really like the hemp/cotton ON doubler. When we travel I use it outside of a Snappi'd prefold overnight. I think that combination gets clean more easily than my fitteds, especially when we are going into unfamiliar laundry territory.
  • They are our preferred diaper. We use the hemp inserts. The inserts take a loooong time to dry. Mister is now the best bottoms champion. Lol. He even convinced our neighbors that are planning to CD to use them. He likes that you don't have to unstuff the grody diaper and I like that you can just snap in the insert. When going out it is easier to have inserts ready and 1 spare cover rather than 3-4 bulky diapers.

  • We use BB covers at night over Sloomb. I have 2 of their hemp inserts that I like. I'd probably get more if we could afford them or were going to have a 3rd child.
  • Do BBs run smaller than other OS covers? I tried one on my toddler (hook and loop) and the waist seemed much smaller than on other covers I've tried. It would definitely not fit on my child until 35 pounds.

(Sorry for bumping a sort of old thread.)

They are definitely more trim than a Thirties size 2 or coverall or Nicki's cover, but as an AI2, they aren't really designed to be used over a fitted, so they don't need to be as roomy. I didn't have any trouble using it with a BB insert on my 25lb 2yr old.

  • We use exclusively Best Bottoms on our LO's in the daytime.  I love that they are trim so no sagging between the legs.  And I like that the double snaps are horizontal so there is no wing droop.  Since I don't care for the microfiber inserts I use prefolds and flats.  I probably would like the hemp/cotton but I just don't find the need for them when we like prefolds and flats soo much.  BBs also fit great over workhorses.  I use Imagine or Nickis covers overnight because they are roomier.  They are also cheaper so I don't mind that they only wear them overnight (once) and then they are thrown to be washed.

Thanks. I have a 25 pounder, too, and the BB didn't fit well with a prefold in it. Maybe the prefold was my problem.

Could be. I found the prefolds I tried to use caused gapping. But a single insert or a flat works well IME.
