June 2013 Moms

I need bottle help

Sadly, I'm not talking about wine.

So this isn't about my June kid, but I am not active at all on N's BMB and I just need some advice.

N is having massive trouble taking a bottle. We have tried a few different kinds and she struggled basically the whole feeding (so I'm told- I'm not there which is why she is getting a bottle in the first place). My H thinks the nipple on the Medela bottle is too long and she is gagging on it? But I don't know- cause she takes a paci alright and those seem similar?

I feel really helpless because I am not the one trying the bottle- should I be trying to have her take a bottle from me? She starts going to a babysitter next week and I am just freaking out that she will be screaming the whole day because she is hungry and won't take a bottle- this is what happened when I went out for a couple hours yesterday.

Any insight would be so appreciated. Or prayers- I'm struggling even more to end my maternity leave now :(

  • We haven't tried dr browns- but I will try anything at this point. I have a relatively strong letdown- so go to a 2 nipple? Instead of a one? I had zero problems transitioning B to a bottle so know nothing- I feel like a moron!

  • We used tommy tippee and both my boys used them for other people OK when I wasn't around. I would definitely try different flows though, every kid and mom is different. I had a slow let down and Arlo (almost 17 months) is still using 1s happily, where as I know a friend who used TT switched to 2s at 3 months.

  • We used tommee tippee bottles with Grayson and he didn't ever seem to have a problem with them. Wide base and shorter nipple. He also used tommee tippee binkies exclusively for a long time.

  • I'm no help. Madeline has always refused breast milk in a bottle. i just wanted to say good luck! I'm sure you'll find something that works for you guys. Fwiw, M would drink WCM from the Avent Natural bottles u til we cut out the bedtime bottle a week ago, so she did like those ones just always refused when she was younger and it had breastmilk in it. I'm sure if I had out more effort into it she probably would have figured it out.

  • Thank you ladies! We went to target today and gathered a bunch of different ones to try and we are going to start offering bottles at lest once a day. Which means I have to pump more, which I dread- but gotta do what i gotta do. We have one week until I go back to work, so hopefully, with more practice she will be ok. Thanks again!

  • We used the Lansinoh Momma bottles -- E refused everything else.  They supposedly look and feel more like the breast/nipple.

I was in the same place as you until we found these.  I know a bunch of breastfeeding ladies on here had success with them as well!

    g/l!

I've heard good things about these bottles! If I have the same issue with the next baby I'm going to try these first.

  • Old school latex playtex drop ins bottles borked best for us. We needed the high flow immediately.

FWIW- KJ wouldn't take a bottle from me or anyone leading up to daycare. The first week in daycare was rough but it took about 3 weeks to get her taking them consistently. It was stressful but it just took time.

  • @catalinapink - thank you so much - I have a Dr. Browns.  Right now I am going to try a Avent Natural, Dr Brown and Tommy Tippee.

@sctiger - I was wondering if taking a bottle from me would help or hurt.  I am really glad that I will be able to feed her - I have way more patience than my H - I can see him boiling over while he is trying to feed her and it kills me.

And thanks @lioness13 - Good to know they can eventually get it together at daycare.

  • Momma bottles by lansinoh. The only bottle Owen ever took, and he took it right away with no issues.

  • Evening one of operation get Nora on a bottle. She eventually took the bottle- but it was basically a struggle the whole time. And it started off with projectile vomiting all over me when she gagged on the first bottle. But after two switches, she ended up drinking out of an Avent. Hopefully, tomorrow we won't struggle and cry the whole time. Oh yes- and that we is because both her AND I were struggling and crying the whole time.
