Potty Training during Travel

Tips, tricks and advice are appreciated. DS is doing a great job on the potty but I have no idea how often to stop.

Should we limit how much we let him drink? How do I keep him from falling into the habit of "it's safe to go potty in the car seat"?

We have to drive during his normal poop time but he doesn't really know in advanced yet. He just kind of yells and runs to the bathroom when he has to poop. He has a potty seat that fits on a standard toilet but should we being his potty chair for emergencies?

Help please and thank you.

  • I have no idea but we will be in the same boat in about 2 weeks and I'm terrified. Lol.

  • Your son will be a pro by then @CdnFarmGirl08‌. I'll try to remember to post what worked or helped so you have a little more to go by.

That was my first instinct @dorothygale01‌. My only concern is DH. We've had the talk about how long a 2 year old can hold it already and DH thinks an hour or more is ok. I have a serious fear of a bladder infection or him crying and saying "sowwee" because he peed himself even though he tried to hold it. That breaks my heart every time.

  • I would limit drinks too.

If my son hasn't had much to drink he usually doesn't need to go for 2-3 hours.

  • Limiting drinks makes me feel bad but it also seems necessary. Half a sippy for breakfast and half for lunch is enough to drink, right? I'm not sure how much to limit.

  • I would. It's not like it's for a extended period of time.

  • How long can he currently stay dry for? Set him up for success by not exceeding that time. A potty seat/ potty in the car may be a good idea for emergencies or if a rest stop is not close by. Highly reinforce (bubbles/candy/stickers) for peeing in random places (start now) :) so that by the time you are traveling he is use to the drill. As for fluid intake I would keep it normal but not excessive and just plan for a longer trip.

    Goooooood luck.

  • @boxerrrmama85‌ he has held it for 4 hours but that resulted in the worst breakdown we've ever had. I make it a point to take him every hour usually.

@dorothygale01‌ that depends on DH and his mood. If he's pissy he won't pull off on the side of the road so there's a chance that he wouldn't stop.

  • Ugh I HATE travel after PTing. We did what should have been an 8 hour drive a few months after potty training... took us 11 hours. They learned that when they yelled that they had to pee or poop, we'd stop the car and get out. They were sick of sitting in the car so they used that to their advantage. It SUCKED. But yes, bring a little potty for side of the road or gross bathroom emergencies.
