Am I hurting my supply?

hi ladies, possibly a silly question but I seem to be getting mixed responses. Will pumping this early (1w1d pp) mess with my supply? Will I overproduce? Underproduce? I had mastitis 3x within 6 weeks with my first DD and really want to educate myself/do everything properly to try to avoid that again. LO seems to be a lazy eater at night, causing us to have 1.5 hour nursing sessions at a time (with her switching sides about 3x). At first I thought she wasn't getting anything...but after a cluster feeding from 7-11 pm last night, I pumped (for the first time) and got 2.5 oz within maybe 10-15 min. I'm fairly confident I'm producing enough right now...but I have no other explanation for our night struggles. I read in the EP thread that a 3 oz bottle may be the way to go instead?
should I be pumping about an hour after every feeding during the day? Will this hurt me if I don't pump throughout the night (Or if i would only feed or pump at least once)?
Any advice/schedule recommendations?

Re: Am I hurting my supply?

  • @AeandJb‌ thank you! I may try to give her a bottle tonight instead & see if that helps. Do you warm straight from your fridge stash? I never pumped & saved with DD1, I feel lost in this dept

  • @AmyG*‌ thank you so much! That was very helpful. I did pump once yesterday prior to responses, but the pump is away & not coming back out until I need to start building a stock pile. I am returning to work between 6-8 weeks pp, should I start pumping at 4 weeks pp to make sure I have enough? What would you recommend? Should my supply be evened out at that point to reduce the risk of an oversupply or how does that work?
  • I have been wondering all of this..thanks for the answers!

  • So much helpful info here! Thanks ladies!
  • Update: After I feed her all night (she doesn't eat a ton), I wake up really huge so I do our morning feeding around 9am and then hand pump and freeze the rest. It gives me tremendous relief and then the rest of the day I'm comfortable..it also allows me to freeze some daily. I think this is a good route for now!

  • @staugustinewedding‌ I just started that this morning. Both sides felt very full & since she only feeds on the one side in the am, I decided to pump the other for some relief. Just spoke with lactation 10 minutes ago about possible engorgement/fullness and that's the first thing she suggested. I'll be continuing with just the morning pump for a week or two, then add a few pumping sessions gradually.

Awesome! Glad to hear the LC approves (I was hoping one would). Good luck with your BF journey!!
