Moms who are still BFing

E is slowly cutting down on night nursing (Thank God!) but in 24 hours she still nurses at least 3 times, some days its more.

What I want to know is how much milk are your LOs drinking outside of BFing? E is on toddler formula because she still eats very little food and I think she's probably taking about 10oz a day now. I think that her nursing is often just for comfort, I'm pretty confident my supply is minimal.

Just wondering where everyone else is at. Thanks!

  • Some days G will only drink cows milk and other days he will drink less.  I can't say how much exactly but he always has a sippy full of something (water or milk) all day long.

He will nurse every morning and night during the week and on the days I'm with him all day long he will probably nurse a few more times. I do know that it is mostly a comfort thing for him now and I know my supply is definitely minimal as well.

  • My supply is still pretty high, because I do still get that full feeling if I go a long time without nursing.  LO just loves to nurse, and since I'm home with her (after finishing last school year teaching) it works for us. She nurses about 6 times during the day in addition to overnight.  She gets up once per night regularly, but has been teething really badly and has had nights where she's nursed 4x in a night.  She doesn't like cows milk at all, and only drinks water otherwise.  She's kind of a picky eater, and doesn't like meat very much.  She also is allergic to eggs, and my son has a peanut/nut allergy so that really isn't an option for protein, so I'm happy to keep nursing.  We keep trying with lots of different meats/fish but we're not getting too far with it.

  • I'm still pumping at work twice a day and the girls get that in straw cups (2 feedings) the next day. Then they nurse about 3-4 times a day on top of that. I haven't introduced regular milk yet. However, my pumping output is decreasing so I'm only pumping around 9-10 oz a day (total, not for each baby) so I think next week I am going to drop a pump and introduce a cup of goat's milk once/day. They are pretty good eaters too.

My pedi said they still need at least 16 ounces of milk a day right now.

  • I also feel like at least E is getting a little closer to weaning herself. Last weekend my right breast (hers) got all hard and lumpy because she hadn't drained it that day. I had to let V finish the job overnight.

  • A still nurses in the morning and before a nap. As well she nurses at night and through the night. She doesn't really drink milk. She has yogurt and cheese-as much as I can get her to eat.

I tried not letting her nurse so she would eat or drink more but it didn't work.

Honestly I am worried about her. Her doctor is also worried but has offered no advice. I am going back to another doctor soon.
  • We are still nursing twice a day (morning/wake-up and bedtime). My LO now loves WCM but it did take time. She drinks it throughout the day but I really don't know how many ounces she gets. We use smaller sippys and I estimate maybe 4 sippys per day which are maybe 4-5 ounces each (sorry for all the maybes). Some days she seems to drink a ton and some days much less. 10 ounces of formula doesn't sound too bad to me. Before my LO started to really like WCM she probably drank less than that.
  • My LO still nurses several times per day when we are together. She won't drink pumped milk anymore but will drink a little bit of soy milk. We tried wcm but she doesn't tolerate it well

  • Since going on holiday E is up nursing about 7 times a night and about 3-6 times during the day. She won't drink WCM so the only thing she drinks is water, BM and yogurt.

  • DS still nurses about 3 times a day and doesn't drink much milk. Maybe one sippy cup of milk a day.
  • Thanks for the feedback! It's sounds like she is probably doing ok then :)
  • We are still nursing 2-3 times per day, and my DD's WCM intake is probably 12-16 ounces per day, so if your LO is getting 10 ounces outside of nursing that often, I would think it's sufficient.  It's my understanding that the milk intake is more for ensuring adequate protein in the diet.  Not sure what the protein content in toddler formula is, but I would think it's at least what she would be getting through WCM.
