Breastfeeding and pumping

I just started pumping today and my doctor gave me a lot of suggestions, in which completely went way over my head. I still want to breastfeed so I'm just trying to figure out when I should pump.. Should I pump before or after breastfeeding? Any tips?

Re: Breastfeeding and pumping

  • Yup...after you feed her. I have heard between 1 and 5 am is when you can get the most milk- worked for me. If you want to up the supply- try to pump once more during the day. Some people pump after every feeding, but that seems a lot to me. Your boobs would be solid hard...

  • Thanks for the tip ladies
  • @somerandomchick is right that it really depends on your lifestyle and the reason you are pumping. I'm a SAHM, so I can feed my little guy throughout the day and don't need a big stash. I just pump once a day in the morning when my breasts are really full in order to build up a small stash for date night or times when I may need to be away from him.
  • I agree about lifestyle too. Everybody has different lifestyles and different babies. My son is two months old, and he typically eats about 6:30 or 7:00 PM, then goes down for the night around 7:30 PM. Since he typically eats every two hours during the day, I pump at 9:30 or 10:00 PM before I go to bed. He usually sleeps 10-12 hour stretches at night, so I will wake up to pump once or twice. If he sleeps long enough, I might also have to pump at like 5 AM. I know that seems like a lot, but he wakes up totally starved, often nursing and taking all or part of a five ounce bottle. Plus, I like to keep the freezer well stocked and have bottles for long days out, like when I go grocery shopping or something. It takes practice to figure out what works for you, but you'll get the hang of it!
  • @oursong611‌ how did you get your 2 month old to sleep that long through the night? My LO will be a month next week and she wakes up in the night.

I'm pretty sure it's not recommended to let your kid sleep that long, not that I'm judging. My son is 11 weeks old, and will sleep for about 5 hours from 7p to 12p. Anything beyond that, we wake him up to feed. Most of the time, he only sleeps for two to three hours between feeds.

My wife would go straight off her meds if I attempted to let our kid sleep that long.
  • Well, I didn't really do anything, except switch him to his crib. He wasn't sleeping well in his bassinet at night (I think partially because he's so big 15 lbs., & 24 1/2 inches), but I noticed he did really well in his crib during the day for naps, so out of sheer desperation, I tried him there one night. He only woke up once, so we kept at it. He usually goes to bed about the same time each night (7:30-8). I feed him, rock him, pray for him, and put him in his crib on his tummy. He's been able to lift and move his head well since he was born, so his pediatrician and my nurse friend both assured me that it was OK for him to sleep that way.

The first time he slept all night, I freaked out, checking on him every two hours or so. I have an excellent baby monitor in my room, but it still took me awhile to realize that he was OK. I realize it's unusual for a baby so young to sleep so long, but his pediatrician said it is perfectly fine for him to sleep that long, since he is eating well and growing plenty.
