Can't breastfeed for 48 hours

I started having a horrible pain in my right side last week. It felt like it was getting better until tonight, it was worse than ever. My husband insisted I go to the ER, so that's where I have been hanging out for 4 hours.

When they did a EKG my heart was beating funny at times. So they thought it might be a blood clot. I had to get a CT scan, thank God they didnt find one! But do to the injection I had to get while they did the scan I can't breastfeed for 48 hours.

This breaks my heart. I have worked so hard to get my low supply up a little and I am so worried that my DD won't go back to nursing. And I keep thinking about how she is going to handle not nursing. And how hard it is going to be when she is staring at me with her mouth open.

Has anyone else had to not breastfeed for a couple of days? Did you LO go back to nursing without any problems? How did you mentally handle it?

  • I would call the infantrisk hotline and my personal doctor to see their thoughts on whether to stop BFing or not before I did

  • I plan on pumping that isn't what I am worried about... My concern is what if she has trouble re-latching. I worked so hard to get us to this point and what if she then prefers bottles over the breast.

  • I agree with PP about getting slow flow bottles and doing paced feedings. My DS has no problem going back and forth. We've never gone that long though of him having bottles. Hopefully she can go back to it no problem!

  • I stopped breastfeeding at 2.5 weeks due to severe nipple damage and pain and pumped for a week to try and heal up. I brought LO back to the breast after that week with no problems and we have been successfully EBF since then. I would also suggest slow flow nipples like PPs mention. Sorry that you're going through this and hoping your LO goes back to breast with no issues.

  • The longest I went was about 24 hours, but my experience was that they always preferred mom to the bottle. I think the comfort factor of being with mom really helps.

  • Thank you everyone. After 8 long hours they finally let me go home, they couldn't figure out what is causing me so much pain.

She takes a bottle great, she gets one at every feeding due to my low supply, so I am just crossing my fingers this goes smoothly. All though, it was so sad, when I got home and picked her up she started rooting like crazy and was upset when I didn't let her nurse.

  • I'm so sorry you're having to take 48 hrs off after working so hard to get to where you are.. Like you've said, just continue in with your pumping to keep up supply and as for her relaunching after, hopefully the comfort of being with mom will help encourage her back to the routine. Like pp said, I would try the slow flow nipples- I've had good luck with tommy tippee when I pump and bottle feed. I know it's going to be a rough next two days but this is something out of your control and you're doing what's best for you and your baby, hopefully you can find comfort in that and then you'll be back to your normal feedings before you know it. Also I hope you're able to find some comfort for your pain and some answers soon. Being in pain while caring for a newborn is not easy at all.
    Good luck !
  • I was actually admitted for 5 days after giving birth due to an infection on my c section site. But I was on IVs, severe pain medications and not being able to eat even. I couldn't pump and couldn't feed my baby or even hold her

When I came out of the hospital my supply was so low that each feeding I had to supplement with a bottle. But after working on it (eating a lot of the right things, and trying every trick in the book) and being really patient with DD so she could basically relearn latching I am able to exclusively breast feed her with no problem!
  • I hope your pain subsides & you can find out at some point the cause of the pain.
Also I know you are concern for your LO & I can understand the emotions you are going through , as my supply has been a struggle too & it does take much effort to nourish your LO & all the emotions that we experience can be stressful, PPs suggested some wonderful advice to try. Well wishes and fx your LO has a smooth transition back to nursing
  • So after a ton of research I decided to just wait 24 hours and MOTN feeding her right now.

I found more research, including from the National College of Radiation that said even nursing immediately after a scan is safe. I only found 1 article that said you may want to wait .

My cousin in law is in pharmacy school and she couldn't find anything other than reading it is safe as well.
