hi everyone I'm wondering when do you start to buy maternity clothes I'm a little over 8 weeks along and I'm noticing my pants are becoming more and more uncomfortable to wear and I can't button them without it irritating my stomach. This is my first child so I wanted to get some advice please

Whenever you need to. There's a nifty trick with a hairband and your jeans that will buy you some time.

I just bought maternity clothes last week and I'm 26 weeks currently. So everyone is a little bit different. But I am sooooo much more comfortable now that I've given in to elastic waistbands.

Editing to add: at 8 weeks it's just bloat. It will come and go.

  • I bought a piece or two, here and there, throughout my first pregnancy. some of the stuff I bought early on didn't fit in the last month or two. This is my first winter pregnancy, so I need to get some jeans and sweaters. I'm 15 weeks and I think I'll go shopping in the next couple weeks. (The rubber band trick is great.)

I like purchasing from gap, ON, target, Macy's, etc. I like having a good return policy.
  • You can buy little expander things for your pants, but I'd recommend maternity pants once you're uncomfortable in your clothes. I was around 22 weeks when I finally gave in and once I did it was amazing!

  • There is no week number. When you start to feel uncomfortable I would indulge. No need to be uncomfortable.
  • Whenever your clothing starts to get tight. Check out Old Navy and Kohls. Those are the two places I found some good deals with my first daughter.

  • yup, all of the above. For my first pregnancy I still used my jeans and everything else, I just bought the belly bands because all my pants fit and still felt comfortable. I still use my pants with this second pregnancy and do not feel uncomfortable just yet. Let's see how this second time around goes.

  • I had to belly band at 5 weeks because I was so bloated it was uncomfortable to sit. There is no rule to when you should buy them. Just whenever you think you need them. You'll feel much better

    It's a BOY

  • It's different for everyone.  I do caution against jumping in and buying too early, because as @dani_brewer pointed out, most maternity clothes don't fit well too early.  And most of the time, that bloat that happens early on disappears, so you'll be back in regular clothes for a few weeks before the bump makes dressing difficult again.  There is also the concern @orangecurls pointed out that stuff bought early on may not fit in the end, and for me, at least, I didn't want to go out and buy things I'd only be wearing a couple more weeks.

First time around I used a Bella band from weeks 7-10 and then again weeks 14-26 before buying maternity wear.  I just bought shirts a size up to contain my massive breasts, which was helpful, because I could wear them after I gave birth when my breasts were still too big for my normal sized shirts.   This time around I just broke out the Bella band last week.

  • I've been wearing some maternity clothes on and off for about a month or so. In 1st tri I just got a belly band to wear over the top of my pants and kept wearing my regular clothes. Now I have a few pairs of maternity pants, and I'm so grateful for them. So much more comfortable. I also have a half dozen maternity dresses and about a dozen, simple, maternity shirts (long sleeve and shortsleeve tshirts, tank tops, etc)

I broke down and bought some pants this past weekend. I had just bought smaller pants two weeks before I found out I was pregnant. Due to the bloating and this being my second pregnancy (hopefully 1st baby) my pants were miserable. I found the belly bands to be uncomfortable. I am fighting morning sickness really bad and the added pressure on my stomach was miserable. I am much happier in the materinity jeans and no one has to know!

I found some at a resale shop and saved a lot of money! I got Gap jeans for $11. That is an option to look into as well.

  • I agree, try the Belly Band first, I like the one from Motherhood the best.  Everyone is different of course, but I never ended having to buy maternity jeans because of the Belly Band.
  • I never wore maternity clothes with DD. The hair tie trick is your best friend!

Since DH and I knew we were going to try for another one when gap had their sale last spring I stocked up on a ton of clothes. I

  • I bought maternity pants at eight weeks.  I tried the hairband/rubberband trick but it kept falling off and my pants would just be unbuttoned/unzippered.  I've also been wearing a lot of leggings with long sweaters and jersey dresses to avoid having to buy too many new clothes right now.
  • Last time I waited till I was 15-16 weeks.  This time I've been using a hair band and belly band already the last week and a half and bought some maternity clothes online last night.  Wear them when your regular clothes get uncomfortable.

  • I'm 11w3d and I bought some today due to Black Friday sales. I probably won't be needing them for a few more weeks, but I got some really great deals!
  • I'm 7 weeks 6 days and i just placed my order for the belly button bands. My pants are very tight and hurt when I sit. Even it's it's just bloat right now, I'll be using them later on anyway. I'm choosing to be comfortable and hopefully save myself money on maternity pants
