Santa!

Not really to start a debate, just starting a thread cause I can.

We're taking DD to have her picture taken with Santa today. I don't think she fully "gets" the idea of Santa yet. I grew up with the story of Santa and he brought us 1 gift, but the biggest gift came from my parents. When DH was growing up ALL of his presents were from Santa, even gifts from his grandparents and such. I have friends were Santa brings them their "biggest, best, most wished for" gift, and others where he just brings the stocking stuffers. What are each of your traditions with or without Santa if you're electing to start your kids out that way?

Re: Santa!

  • I noticed Santa is at the mall already and thought about taking DD before it gets too busy, or DS arrives. Santa brings a few unwrapped presents to our house and then fills the stockings. Presents from DH and I are wrapped under the tree.

  • There was always something from our parents (clothes and practical stuff mostly) but everything else was from Santa.

  • When I was a kid, Santa brought some of our presents and family brought the rest. I don't remember the division. We even had an elf that would stop by and ring the doorbell on Christmas Eve and bring us a little something.

DH, on the other hand, did not have Santa. Unfortunately, he wants to do the same thing with our kids. It makes me sad and a little concerned about how we will explain it to him since he will see and hear about Santa everywhere. Sometimes you have to compromise, though.
  • At my house growing up and now the biggest gift is from momand dad second from Santa, then spit from siblings Santa and parents.

We play into Santa a lot here even different paper from Santa ect

  • When I was a kid Santa filled stockings, left one big gift unwrapped that we could play with while mom and dad slept in (until 7am lol), and then 2-3 others. I would say of our gifts were from Santa and the other half from our parents. My mom always made sure we had lots of presents.

We do things a little different. Santa leaves one present and fills the stocking. We give Em 4 presents max - usually one thing she wants, one thing she needs, one thing to read, and one thing to wear. This years she's only getting two fairly big gifts. We are giving her a table ands chairs (need), and a huge tool box craft kit. Santa is bringing her a small wooden train set.
  • Growing up Santa would bring the biggest and best gift unwrapped and fill the stockings. Every other present was from mom and dad or whatever relative. Presents would be wrapped and under the tree throughout the Christmas season. It was awesome coming home from school to see a new present had been wrapped and under the tree for us. DH family only put out presents on Christmas morning and everything was from Santa.

DH didn't care how we did it with DD so we're doing my tradition of one big unwrapped present from Santa (plus stocking) and everything else from us or other relatives. DD is so into Santa this year. She kind of got it last year, she knew of "Santa" but I don't think knew that it was him bringing the gifts. This year she's all about it and when people ask her about Christmas she always tells them that she has to be a good girl in order for Santa to bring her presents. I'm not going to lie I've played the "Santa is watching you" card when she's in one of her terrible moods.

  • When I grew up there was a town santa program so parents would drop off wrapped gifts and Santa would come to your house on Christmas Eve and give you the present.  I remember that Santa drove a station wagon.  We'd also get one gift from Santa under the tree, complete with my Mom's handwriting saying Ho ho ho and stockings.   I'm pretty certain I knew that the guy who came to my house wasn't real but it didn't mean I wasn't excited for presents, LOL.

Not sure what we're doing, FIL was supposed to dress as santa but last year he was a jerk and dressed up while LO was sleeping, handed out all the gifts and dressed in regular clothes by the time LO woke up, I'm thinking of boycotting christmas at their house all together quite frankly after the way LO was treated.
