Breastfeeding Book Suggestions

Does anyone have any suggestions for books on breastfeeding? I've looked into the classes but none of the dates our hospital offers really works for us. So I figured it would at least be good to read a book about breastfeeding.

Re: Breastfeeding Book Suggestions

  • "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" was my go-to. It's well written, easy to understand, and has a ton of useful information!

  • Another Kelly mom vote. I have a breast feeding book, but used kelly mom much more.

I have heard good things about the womanly art of breast feeding though.

  • Im reading Making More Milk and I love it so far!!
  • I am about halfway through The Womanly Art and this is how I feel about it: it seems VERY geared towards having a medication-free birth of baby. They have continually referenced the baby as being alert/eager to feed ASAP due to a non-medicated mother and labor process, and only being able to achieve best results this way, which might come off as a bummer to a mom planning for an epidural. (I myself plan for a medication-free, low-intervention birth so I've found found this aspect very supprotive/reassuring of my plans, but would probably be discouraged right off the bat if I was planning on pain meds for L&D).

What I personally don't like about the book is that I also get the feeling that they are wanting you to BF (literally, with the breast) as long as possible before any type of bottle is introduced. As in, shame on those moms who introduce bottles so soon because they want to continue to feed breast milk, hence going through the whole pumping routine because they have to return to a 40 hour work week after a 3 month (or less) maternity leave from their jobs. Not everyone can be a SAHM la Leche league.
  • Hmmm good to know @nbad311. I "plan" a med-free birth (specifically in part due to the alleged easy/aid in bfing) but absolutely am going back to work at MOST 12 weeks pp and guess what kiddo, bottles it is. Think I'll skip that book...

I agree that they were totally on a soap box. BUT, I learned  a ton of useful information from the book, so if you are willing to look past the ideology the book is super helpful.

Anyone read the Sears Breastfeeding book? I really liked the Healthy Pregnancy book, and am considering buying a couple other Sears books, too.

Yes, I agree.  @irishcurls , despite my seemingly negative review, the book seems like it will be very helpful for a FTM as myself.  It's a good read, not too boring or cheesy.  It's quite long too (500+ pages I think) so you can read it from start to end, or pick through and read different sections they have broken out.  Apparently I'm just like, super sensitive right now and easily take offense to everything.  Even books!
