Breastfeeding

Transitioning to cow's milk

Happy Sunday all!

LO will be 1 in a couple of weeks and my supply has been gradually diminishing as we near the finish line. We have been supplementing with 1 bottle of formula a day when I don't pump enough at work and recently introduced whole cow's milk in small amounts.

As we near the 12 month mark I am so confused on the transition to cow's milk. I know the recommended amount is 16-20 ounces a day, but I would like to continue to breastfeed morning and night. Does that impact the amount of cow's milk I should be giving?

Thanks in advance for any help!

One of the best things about extended BF is you get to stop worrying about supply, how much they're getting, etc. I just make sure I don't give crazy amounts of WCM but mostly follow his lead.
My DD is turning 1 in about 2 weeks and I've wondered this, too! And yes, that stress about supply and feeling like I'm the only one who can nourish is has now subsided. I'm so excited! It's funny how now that we're starting the weaning process I'm enjoying BFing a lot more. I am going to continue to nurse morning and night for a little while longer (maybe as long as we both can stand it) and provide a few ounces of breastmilk (until my freezer stash runs out) and WCM with at least 2 meals/day (and water whenever she wants it). Like a PP mentioned I will also provide yogurt and cheese.

At 12 months, we were working against a cows milk sensitivity, just to straight milk, not cheese or yogurt, so we first transitioned to soy milk. By 15 months we were on cows milk. I stopped pumping at work at a year and she got 2 oz of (soy)milk in a sippy at breakfast and lunch at daycare and 4 to 6 oz at dinner and at least 2 servings a day of other dairy, like cheese and yogurt. I nursed morning, evening and before bed plus on demand on weekends until 15 months. Once she was ok on cows milk I felt comfortable dropping the morning session but kept her cows milk intake the same as the soymilk. At about 18 months we are nursing before bed, occasional evenings during the week and on demand and before naps on weekends. She still gets 2 oz at breakfast and lunch at daycare, 4 to 6 oz at dinner.

Our pediatrician told us that 2 to 3 good nursing sessions (not just nibble and run) plus two or three servings of other dairy are good enough for no other milk to drink. Cheese and yogurt serving sizes for a baby are surprisingly small and very easy to get in. This could be cheese straight or in various forms, like baked into stuff, or parmesan on pasta etc, plus yogurt, pudding, ice cream (obviously the sweet stuff in moderation, but it counts!).

We offer plenty of water to hydrate, she has a sippy of water all day every day.
