NT Scan - Not sure how I feel

So my RE gave me the packet of information about the NT scan on Friday. I go in at 10 weeks and then we would schedule my scan from there. Now I went in knowing they would be recommending it, and having no reservations about it, but now I'm not so sure...

So I actually saw a different RE in the practice Friday, not really a fan of her anyways, and in talking about the scan she says "Now of course this won't diagnose a baby with anything, but it will tell if they have a higher chance of having these conditions. So I suggest it because then if one baby comes back positive for it, you could just reduce and not put strain on the other baby."

First, I just don't like how easily she throws around reduction as this is something DH and I talked about extensively prior to starting treatments. Second, this test DOESNT diagnose. So if one baby came back positive, it just means they're at higher risk, not a guarantee. and even if I knew I would have a child with down syndrome or a trisomy disorder, I still wouldn't necessarily abort. My feelings are that unless the baby can be for sure diagnosed, and they tell me "this child WILL not live outside the womb" or "this child may only live a few days but carrying to term would threaten the life of the other baby" then I would never reduce.

So with all that being said, I suppose what would be the point of getting the tests done seeing as how they can't give me a definitive answer.

I know that was long and I apologize, but I'm just looking for some other input from you ladies. I think the lax use of the reduction term has really thrown me off and I can't shake it. Thanks ladies!

While I am not in the same circumstance as you, we have decided that we weren't going to do the testing since we felt it wouldn't give us information that would change anything and there are some risks associated with it. Talk it over with your DH and decide what is right for you guys.

Thanks ladies. Sometimes I just seriously doubt myself because of my emotions haha. DH and I are on the same page about probably not doing it, but I just wanted a little reassurance I think that my decision wasn't "ohmygodterrible" which is how I feel that RE is going to react when I tell her no. But I'm going to stick to my guns on this one.

In my opinion, knowledge is power. If the results won't change anything, great. But it's never a bad idea to prepare (practically and emotionally). From what I understand, there are also certain conditions that can complicate delivery, and knowing about them now will help you and the doctors prepare.

Ahh no. I appreciate it! And I have thought about this as well. But I will keep it in my find further as I make the decision. Thanks the response. I really wanted to see opinions on both sides, so I do appreciate it.
