LO hates being worn

Self-explanatory - DS seems to hate the Moby wrap in both the hug hold and kangaroo hold. Legs in, legs out, doesn't matter. He has fallen asleep in it twice when he was brand new and now he just pulls away and screams. He pulls his head back to look around. I had such high hopes for babywearing for bonding and to just allow me to get shit done but he seems to hate it, at least the Moby. I don't want to invest money in other carriers he might hate. I have a babywearing friend who is going to show me other wraps at Thanksgiving but wondering if other people are having the same experience.

DD didn't much like being worn or swaddled or otherwise confined. She is very cuddly now but didn't like being restricted as an infant. DS seems to be similar.

Re: LO hates being worn

  • Not much advice, as my LO turns 3 wks tomorrow and I wore her in the Moby for the first time today.  She went apeshit when I first unswaddled her to put her in, but that's because she was hungry.  So I changed her, fed her, and plopped her in and she fell right asleep in the newborn hold and we were able to go for a walk around the neighborhood for an hour.  I followed a You Tube video on how to wrap her.  Have you tried multiple different holds?  Some kids just dislike being worn, but I'd try lots of different holds before throwing in the towel.  Good luck!

  • We had this issue with DS1. We tried different carriers, different positions.  The best advice I received was to put him in after he was changed, fed, and drowsy.  Only keep him in for a short period, unless he fell asleep.  We started out with like 5 minutes, then slowly worked our way up.  If he freaked out we took him out immediately.

Check to see if there is a chapter of BWI (babywearing international) near you. You can try on carriers from their library and be shown how to use them (or your own) correctly and safely by an educator. If you join the chapter (~$30 annually), you can check out carriers from their library for a month at a time, to see if you and LO really love it before you invest. Some people spend a year just borrowing carriers and never buying. It's a great resource.

So when you put LO into the moby, get moving. Walk with a little bounce in your step, and walk walk walk. Give LO a minute or two to settle before you start on the housework. Many babies don't like being worn when mom is standing still.

ETA: If after that minute or two LO is just not having it, take him out. ;)

  • With C, it also took her about a week to get used to being worn and to not fight it. During that first week, it would take several minutes to get her to calm down once she went in it. Now, she calms down very quickly (been using it almost daily for three weeks, in various circumstances and locations).

As PPs have said, walking around for a few minutes usually does the trick. I do a few laps around the house, shush him, and pat his bum. He has always settled down but it sometimes takes a little longer.

  • My DS got tired of the K-tan pretty early on doing the same stuff you are mentioning.  Once he had neck control I moved him into the Balboa sling.  I would put him cross-legged - criss-cross applesauce :), then have him face outward with his back against my chest.  He LOVED it!!  I could put him in that for a long time and take him all over the place in it.  He loved being able to look around at everything.  I think that might be why they fight it so much.  As their eyesight gets better they want to look around and not just at mom's chest.
