Cloth Diapering

Grandma El's/CJ's and Repelling

On LO's first day of daycare he came home with a nasty bright red rash.  Still not 100% sure what caused it, but after slathering on lots of Grandma El's for 2 days it was gone.  After those two days he was back in daycare where they use CJ's in a stick and I think they were using that pretty heavily after learning about the rash.  By the end of that week we were having repelling issues.  I wasn't sure what to pin it on as there were a few different variables.  My mom did diaper laundry for the first time and also did some baby clothes and admittedly used way too much Dreft (not on the diapers, just the clothes).  We had also been getting some stink (we use pockets and AIO's) so to clear it all up I ran all his diapers through several hot no-detergent washes and started stuffing his pockets with prefolds.  That seems to have fixed the issue.  I didn't consider the cream being an issue at first because it's supposed to be CD safe, but now I'm not sure.  Have any of you had any issues with Grandma El's or CJ's causing repelling if used too heavily?  That was really a PITA and I don't want that to happen every time he gets a rash.

  • I haven't had issues, but it seems to me that neither of those products should be "slathered" on. A thin layer is really all that is needed.

  • I don't think grandma els washes out that easily. I've noticed the smell is always left behind even after washing. So if you were really laying it on thick I believe that could cause problems. Time to bust out the dawn.

  • I've used it sparingly with no problems before, but the rash was his entire diaper area, up the insides of his legs and everything.  My mom had him while I was at work for those two days and I think she put it on pretty heavy.  We're pretty new at this, so I figured if it was CD safe it wouldn't matter.

  • Yeah, but even if it's CD safe I don't think it's meant to be used that heavily, so it doesn't surprise me that some if it could have been clinging to your diapers and causing issues.
  • Thanks!  So if I need to use it for more than a spot here and there, what would you guys recommend?  Just put a light layer, use a liner or sposies, or just use something else all together?

  • Yes, just a light layer. As in, there shouldn't be any extra that will rub off onto anything else. I like to use a liner, but I think that's optional.
  • Some people have issues with Grandma El's if it's too thick.

  • We had repelling from the nanny over-using CJs. Definitely instruct the DC to only use a light layer.

  • So it sounds like it was a little bit of both causing the problem. Thanks for the help!
