Can I ask to have an ultrasound early?

This is my third pregnancy and I'm very anxious. I need some kinda ease. Can I ask my doc for an earlier ultrasound, rather than waiting until 8wks?

  • You can ask, but honestly.... You just need to chill out. 8 weeks will be here before you know it!

  • Well at 6wks you can see a heartbeat and can verify a pregnancy.

Your positive pee stick wasn't verification enough?!? :-??

  • Sorry for asking.
  • These question threads are so damn confusing. I hate that it pulls all of the accepted answers to the top and puts everything out of order. DO YOU HEAR ME, BUMP GODS?! *shakes fist* And yeah, OP, be grateful that you have no need for an early ultrasound. Honestly.
    Agree..

Yes @estamos_tomamos‌ is this a new thing where the OP gets to choose the "best" answer no matter how silly the question?
Ugh... Yay, let's highlight WK's and encourage nonsense!

  • I could have one early, I could also have numerous betas done since I miscarried last yr and then 2.5 monthes ago miscarried twins. I am choosing not to becuase.honestly with the twins the ultrasounds and blood work caused me more stress. Waiting for blood results and since I ovulate late and have longer cycles the dates are off. I actually find I am much more relaxed right now, my body will tell me if something is wrong and when I see my midwife at 10 weeks, that will be it honestly. Sometimes the more shit you do earlier the more it actually stresses you out. My opinion and experience anyway. Just be thankful that your dr does not consider you high risk.
  • I had to wait until 20 weeks with my first two. I understand your anxiety, but trust that your OB knows best.

    This.

  • They will give you an ultrasound if you aren't sure on your dates...I have some friends who said they weren't sure of when they conceived and got an early ultrasound. You could try that if you think it will relieve your worries.
  • My doctor doesn't normally do an ultrasound until the 20wk appt. However, we did ended up doing one to check dates and I am off 7 days due to longer cycle/ovulating late. This happened with my last pregnancy too. We waited until over 8wk for the appt and I must say I agree with the other comments. It would have caused more stress if it was too early for heartbeat or to see anything. Pregnancy is well 10 months of hoping that everything is ok until they arrive. After 20 wk ultrasound we have to wait again to see them too. Good luck

We just talked about this. There is no reason for an early ultrasound unless you have a history of medical issues or did fertility treatments.

Ok, I'll disagree. my dr did an ultrasound during my 6th week to confirm location and number. I did not do fertility treatments this time. Apparently she thought there was reason to do one.

Some doctors do it to confirm your due date but it really isn't medically necessary for low risk pregnancies
  • I had a dating ultrasound because my LMP and O date were 2 weeks off, my midwife wanted to confirm for various reasons. I was okay with that because I wanted them to be accurate and not risk inducing early thinking I was actually 2wks past edd.

The ultrasound was boring. I saw a blob that flickered. Sure its nice knowing my baby is okay, but really it wasn't all that exciting to see and I would hve been fine waiting a few more weeks for the nt scan. 8wks isn't far away, it makes more sense to wait. Unless you have a legit reason for an ultrasound, you don't need it.

  • Sorry for asking.

Well, the answer I'm assuming you were hoping for is "yes, you can ask for an early ultrasound" which is the obvious answer but I think people were giving you honest feedback about why it probably isn't appropriate so your response was rude and immature. If you don't want honest answers, why did you ask?

Don't be sorry. They are just saying there is no medical reason to get one but if it makes you feel better ask for one. I had to go in early to discuss pain I was having so they just went ahead and did the viability ultrasound then at 6 weeks. Maybe go in between 6-7 weeks so you have a good shot of seeing something.
