Tips on progesterone?

Hi! I just found out that I am 4 weeks pregnant and my levels are normal but my doctor is suggesting I go on progesterone. Does anyone have experience with this? Would like to know if it's the right thing to do and if there are any intense side effects? Thank you!

Re: Tips on progesterone?

  • I'm also on progesterone.  Honestly the suppliments aren't fun, but if it will help miscarriage, it's worth it.  I have the suppositories 2x/day.  I'm wondering though, if your levels are normal, why your doc would want you on them.

For side effects, for me, they seem to be similar to early pregnancy side effects: fatigue, sore BBs, moodiness.  The most uncomfortable part is that the goopy medicine leaks out during the day.  Pantyliners are your friend.

Other than that, I would also search the board.  The topic has been discussed and you'll surely find more tips and info.

  • Is this the same as the shot? Starting at 16w I will have to have a shot every week until 36w because my second was a premie. I do not know anyone else who has had progesterone shots. I am a little nervous about having a shot every week.
  • @KellyinHB‌ thanks so much for your input. I was going to a fertility doctor because I wasn't getting my period. Turns out I have PCOS so maybe he is giving it to me as a precaution? I will search the board again to see if I find anything.

@allcampb‌ I'm not sure about the shots, my doctor wants to give me suppositories.
  • dalia123 yes, listed to your doctor. He/she knows far more than any of us here!

Hey. If you are with a fertility doctor adds are they will give you progesterone no matter what. I had an IVF this cycle so I take a shit load of it - shots, pills and suppository. During 'natural' cycles they would put me on suppositories just to be safe.. Trust your doctor- he/she knows what they are doing!!!

  • Oh, the other thing I forgot to mention: for the vaginal ones, they make you super sensitive inside.  I don't mean a warm and fuzzy feeling in heart, "sensitive inside".  I mean the insides of your vag feel like they're on fire at times.  For this reason, we've stayed away from sex until I am done with them (at 10 weeks).

  • jefa621  Lucky!  It's not all the time at least, and was more so in the beginning.

I agree with the poop issues! Almost forgot. That's a major one.  I've finally learned that extra fiber and metamucil help.

  • @dalia123 I too am 4 weeks (and 1 day) and am also on progesterone suppositories.  They're actually the pills that you can take by mouth; however, my doctor just told me to use them vaginally until 10 weeks.  If you were seeing a RE, using progesterone is normal - I know that my doctor gives them to everyone regardless of their treatment path (timed intercourse, IUI, IVF, etc).

I only had a few side effects with mine, some cramping, bloating and quite annoying yellow discharge which is nothing I can't handle.  If we want to have intercourse, I insert it afterwards.
  • @dalia123‌ I too have PCOS that usually runs hand in hand with estrogen dominance meaning having progesterone could possibly make you feel a million times better! It does for me at least & is really lowers the risk of miscarriage! I am on it until 12 weeks- doesn't bother me at other other that inserting it twice daily lol but its totally worth the relief oh knowing having more progesterone helps the placenta a lot!
  • I am 4 weeks, 3 days and also on progesterone. I had two miscarriages very early on earlier this year, so my doctor had me start taking progesterone at 5 dpo each cycle we tried (took 2 cycles). I take the progesterone pill by mouth 3x day. Will continue until at least 12 weeks I believe. Hopefully this baby stays with us! :) the cycle before this I took the pills until my period arrived; I think the only symptoms were fatigue and my boobs were a little sore. Now that I am pregnant this cycle I have those symptoms plus others since I'm actually pregnant now ;) Good luck!!
  • I was on progesterone with my DD u til 12 weeks. My progesterone levels were a 12, they say anything over 10 is normal. So to be safe I was put on the supplement. What were your levels?

  • I'm also on progesterone suppositories 2x a day & I agree w/the side effects including poop issues & annoying discharge. My whole area is a little irritated from wearing pantyliners 24/7 but I think it's totally worth it for a little bit of peace of mind. They are a PITA but everytime I do it I feel like I did one more good thing for my babies to be healthy :)
    Good luck & congrats!
  • I have been on them since I was 5 weeks. Not too many side effects. I have normal pregnancy symptoms, but I'm not sure if that is due to the progesterone or not. They put me on them since I had a miscarriage my first pregnancy, and my progesterone level dropped on this one. My progesterone level wasn't really low but, they told me more won't be a bad thing. I use the suppositories and the only thing I notice is discharge.

  • I'm on it now and totally understand! ! It's like a constant yeast infection. Hate it but it's necessary.
  • I am not taking it now but took it with both my first two pregnancies because I started spotting early on. I continued to spot into the 12 th week with my first and into the 9th with my second. I used the suppositories with no side effects that I remember and ended up with two very healthy boys.
  • Wow thank you everyone for all your answers! You guys are so awesome. I'll let you know how it goes!!
  • For those with suppositories. I take it once a day in the morning. Stuff leaks out of throughout the day. I figured if it is out, it probably is not effective. I get up each morning at 5am and sleep with it till 8am which gives me at least 3 hours without the leakage.
