CVS/Amnio Testing

edited November 2014 in July 2015 Moms
Will you be doing these tests?

Or have you in the past?

I'm expecting for the first time and havent heard any friends or family mention doing this test. Just trying to get other mommy perspectives on this.

Re: CVS/Amnio Testing

  • Usually those aren't done as a standard test. You start with blood work and go from there, if you choose to test at all. If the results show higher risks then the CVS and amnio are further testing.

  • Thanks for all the replies. Very helpful advice.
  • I'm getting the first trimester screen at 12 weeks. If anything comes back with an elevated risk, I plan to try to have the cell-free DNA test done (noninvasive and more accurate than the NT and regular blood test), with amnio being the last resort to confirm the worst if the DNA test was also positive (I think it would be too late for CVS at that point- not sure how long it takes to get results from the DNA test.)

The risks associated with CVS and amnio are pretty small but I still don't want to do them unless it is necessary. I'm under 35 ad have no known genetic issues in the family, so fingers crossed that I won't have to get that far.

  • I don't think they have the newer fetal DNA blood test available here yet, so we are going the route of a normal blood test. The, we will have to decide whether or not to continue with the amnio/CVS in the case of elevated risk. We are, of course, hoping it won't be necessary. However, we would abort in the case of severe genetic disabilities, so it really depends on the risk level.

Blood draw is on Dec. 22.

I am 28 and I have a chromosome trait I carry and was offered CVS or amnio. I had one with my last pregnancy with no complications. boyfriend and I have first appointment on Monday with ultrasound we will decide which one is best to go forward with.
  • If you do it than be prepared to face the results....good and bad. My cousin who lives in France had those done and they came back with an elevated risk for Downs Syndrome. She was loosing her mind when waiting for a repeat of the tests thinking she would have to terminate the pregnancy. And...her little DD is healthy as it can be. I personally think that I would rather have a healthy and happy, worry- free pregnancy and love a sick baby once it arrives than get all stressed out about being pregnant with an ill baby.
