Trouble TTC

My heart is pounding! Moving onto IVF!

I've been too afraid to really believe it, but it looks like we're going to start an IVF cycle within the next week! I  I've been absolutely certain we would not get financing for it (which I hate to have to do to even start with); I'm always freaked out that I'll be turned down for any sort of credit thing, even though our scores are fine and we both just got raises. My parents had the worst credit, got better, messed it up again, repeat. My dad co-signed for my first car loan and I had a 25% interest rate, so that's always in my mind.
I cannot believe we're going to do this! I can't believe we're going to have to make a bunch of payments for a kid. Honestly, insurance companies- get your act together.

Re: My heart is pounding! Moving onto IVF!

  • Good luck! I'm so sorry about the finances...this morning it was kind of hitting me how much cash it would take, although our RE has a 2-fer IVF program available, there's big costs with each transfer. I realized it's not humanly possible for us to have all that cash available to go month after month, but can't get myself to consider financing...insurance companies really do suck.

  • Thank you all. I know I really need to contribute more around here to earn this support (I started hiding when the last IUI didn't work). And thank you for the check-in post reminder, @BlueFairy5!
Honestly, I didn't think we would get to this point, that I would be okay with getting this loan for ivf, but the mr is all for moving forward, and I really want to give him this. He doesn't really talk about how much he wants a child, but he was like "yes, let's do this" when I was hesitating.

  • Good luck! Glad YH is so supportive, even if he is quiet about it.
  • I think it's a crime that insurance companies get away with not covering fertility treatments. That being said, my husband and I had to take a few months to get money saved for our IVF cycle, I surprised myself how much I was able to do without and in no time we had the money. Good luck with your first IVF.

  • IVF coverage is a real travesty.  It's wonderful when states mandate it, but it shouldn't have to be that way in the first place.

I'm sorry you're feeling overwhelmed.  Either on the 3T IVF check-in (if you're not there already) or over on the Infertility board, you'll probably find some guidance around financing, though I know it's different for everyone.  Good luck.

*****baby/pregnancy mentioned***** Just adding my 2 cents on this.......... My state mandates it but my employer chose not to cover anything fertility related, so even if it's mandated in your state don't assume it will be covered. I have excellent health insurance yet we paid 100% out of pocket, we're out close to $20,000 at this point. Yet my BIL and his gf "accidentally" got KU, they had no insurance, she didn't even have a job, didn't pay a dime to have her baby. Gotta love Obamacare. Blows my mind. Sorry if I offended anyone, not my intention.

  • @BlueFairy5‌ I'm not sure what kind of Obamacare you're on, I think there are different types and I apologize for the comment because it came across wrong. It's really the people on Medicaid that I was referring to. I shouldn't have referred to it as Obamacare, it's different. She refers to it as Obamacare, but she just doesn't want to admit she's on Medicaid. I agree with you regarding the state mandate but I went back and forth with my insurance company several times regarding the state mandate, I got nowhere. I'm In Jersey. Sorry but this is a VERY sensitive issue with me, I get very heated thinking about it.

  • Good luck to OP with IVF.

Official diagnosis: Unexplained IF. I am 32. I have low ovarian reserve (low AMH), and poor egg quality. I've also been diagnosed with mild glandular developmental arrest (lining problems, detected with EFT).

We are using open ID donor sperm. IUIs #1-7=BFN. IVF September 2014 antagonist protocol, 8R,5M,3F, 5 day transfer of 1 morula = BFN. IVF#2 planned for January 2015 (antagonist protocol + HGH).

I know it's such a frustrating process and very overwhelming, my best friend did IVF and they are a military family with very little income and were not used to having debt. She was embarrassed to take money from her parents at first, but eventually let them contribute something. She got pregnant and now has a 3 month old and I can't describe how she felt when she was talking about how she even doubted making the decision to do IVF. The numbers are big but hopefully you can pay in increments and it won't seem so bad. PM me with any questions.

    Good luck!!!

@BlueJoan, thanks for the re-welcome! But I'm sorry to see you here. I did get set up for Compassionate Care and First Steps, and our RE is going to check our prescription coverage. They covered femara, and it looks like there's some coverage for follitism, etc, but I don't know if it depends on the reason for the prescription (they didn't ask any questions with my femara).
I've definitely considered waiting to save up more to pay in cash, but the mr is 12 years older than me and ready now. So, to compromise, I'm going to re-work our budget to pay it off as quickly as possibly.

  • @BlueJoan, the meds seem to be the worst of the costs, because, as you said, the unpredictability. I wish it was easy to know how I'll respond based on our femara cycles, but I know that's a big leap. The basic costs (all monitoring, ER, ET, etc.,) are all pretty clear and in two nice packages that ends up being about $7,000. But the meds are a whole different animal, and the options for how to get them are a little overwhelming.

  • I understand the "hiding" all too well. After 3 failed IUI's I didn't come back to TB for almost a year.

And yes the financial burden is ridiculously expensive.

My friends and family surprised me and started a gofundme account. At first I was a little ashamed to ask for money, I felt like this was my problem, but was amazed by all the support. People want to help you and don't really know how so $20 here and there really helps.

I don't know if this is for you, but it helped me save half of the costs for IVF and I am starting in Jan.

    Good Luck to you!!!!
