Oversupply

Does anyone have experience with what to do with an over supply of milk? I know it's kind of a good problem to have compared to women with low supply issues, but my breasts are engorged and painful. I leak everywhere when breastfeeding and my LO ( 6 days old) often is coughing because she's getting too much. I've been trying different positions and pumping a small amount before feedings. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Oversupply

  • The thing that helped the most with my first was unlatching him when my milk let down, waiting for  the flow to slow, then putting him back on. As for leaking... all I can suggest is very absorbent nursing pads, or shoving burp cloths/receiving blankets in your top while nursing, haha. It gets better!

  • I am dealing with this too. I will unlatch him and let down into a burp cloth until it slows down and then put him back on. It is a good problem to have. With my last baby, I struggled with low supply. This is definitely preferable.
  • When I am engorged, I pump for about 3 minutes before nursing and it definitely helps with the firehose effect. I also pump after the feeding is over for another 5 minutes or so to make sure my breasts are really empty.
  • I agree with donating. Its the way my LO eats in the NICU and I cant say how thankful I am for the women who do this.
  • I had the same problem for the first week or so.. I used a hand pump for the first few minutes of feeding then slightly sat back while feeding. Make sure not to pump too much or your body will keep producing that much milk. My milk started to even out after about 8-10 days and only produce what is needed for the baby.
  • Thanks for the help ladies. I will have to look in to donating.
  • I also have a huge supply (baby is 5 days old) and was told do not pump for at least a week to give your body time to regulate how much milk you need. The pump will just screw with the supply and demand system but she said after at least a week I can start pumping.

  • My biggest fear is getting mastitis ...I don't know if I could handle that. I've been manually expressing a little bit just to relieve the pressure. LO is adjusting to the fast flow of milk now compared to the colostrum, so she really only nurses for 15min at a time and sometimes I don't get her onto each boob for the same amount of time bc she fills up so fast. I am looking into a hand pump bc I think that will be really beneficial just to help relieve the pressure at first before she feeds. My boobs are like sandbags and hard to move around at first. Ugh I can't wait for this supply to regulate!!
