Natural births?!?!?!

Hello all :) got my first 8 week us yesterday, my little one looks like am upside down bat or caterpillar in a cacoon lol very cute, anywho seeing my angel and hearing the hb made it very real to me and got me thinkin i want to do a natural birth. No medical issues holding me back so why not? I have an insanely high pain tolerance so im sure that mixed with great breathing exercises, i should be able to this. Women who have done this i would love to hear your experience and advice. FTM and 21 and very excited. Xoxoxoxo

Welcome! I've had two unmedicated births with midwives, and both were very positive and empowering experiences for me.

That said, I don't think it's for everyone, even if the pregnancy is low-risk. I'd suggest getting some childbirth books or taking some classes. Maybe look for a midwife who might be a good fit for you -- the good ones are very supportive and good educators, too.

I also want to add that labor does not go by your plan. It's good to have an idea of things you want to see happen but the most important thing is to educate yourself of different l&d procedures and to keep an open mind. Good luck!

You can "star" the board once you get to it so even if you're on mobile, you can get to it easily. I've been lurking there for a while and it's a GREAT place for info.

Definitely keep an open mind. I was borderline between wanting to go all natural and wanting an epidural. I wanted to make the decision while in labor....well after being in labor for almost 20 hours at midnight I had had enough and just wanted to sleep so I got the epidural.

This time I am going to do the same. I would love to see it all the way through but I know not to be disappointed if it doesn't work out.
Please excuse typos....auto correct hates me. =)

  • Read birthing from within and or look into the Bradley method! Congrats!
  • I had water births for my first two pregnancies and plan on doing the same this time if all goes well.

  • Take a natural childbirth class (I did Bradley), find a midwife or very supportive pro-natural birth OB, and consider hiring a doula. Surround yourself with people supportive of that choice. Go in with your plan but be kind to yourself if you need to deviate. Good luck -- you'll do great!

  • Labor definitely doesnt follow plan! Its good to have an outline of things you'd like, and have your partner be able to advocate for you. But remember, unexpected things happen. I had planned on the completely natural and unmedicated birth as well. My water broke and conteactions never started. I needed pitocin to get things moving. Contractions were only 1 minute apart and lasting 2 minutes. I wanted to vomit. After 6 hours of that, I allowed an IV pain med, and it helped me manage a little better for an hour. Never got an epidural, but I listened to my body and knew I needed that one dose to ease the contractions so I could catch my breath. Keep stuff like that in mind!

  • The ideas in Hypnobirthing were helpful for me during my two med-free L&D experiences.  I didn't buy into everything they said (for instance, that it shouldn't be painful or that you shouldn't use the word pain at all) but some of the concepts and the ability to teach myself to get into "the zone" were very helpful for me.

Not all hospitals have labor tubs or allow water births but I strongly feel that my access to a labor tub was the make-or-break for my ability to go med free.  (My hospital allowed you to labor in the tub but not to give birth in the tub, so find out what your hospital has and allows.)
