Failed 2 hr glucose test

I had the 2 hour test done and just this Monday was told my number was high.I have been referred to a diabetes doctor and was given the tools to check my sugar levels and ketone levels and of course told to watch my food intake. Which I don't even know where to start. How ever I am stressed out and depressed about it because I'm still in denial and I think I should've been given the opportunity to re-test again!

Re: Failed 2 hr glucose test

  • There's a 1 hour and a 3 hour so I don't know what this 2 hour test business is. Also, there are TONS of previous threads on the topic with loads of comments, tips, advice whether you failed the 1 hour or 3 hour tests. I'd recommend reading those.

Since I was borderline with DD and GD runs in my family my doctor has sent me for a 2 hour GD test as well. He said its new and will determine if you have GD or not without having to do the 3 hour. He said he typically will give it to his patients like me so they don't have to possibly go twice. The insurance company won't cover a 3 hour GD test without the failed 1 hour. That's what my lab said at the hospital anyway when I asked why the 2 hour and not go straight to a 3 hour.
  • My doctors office only ever does a 2 hour test. It depends on the doctors office on which test you have to take

Same here, my first test will be a two hour.
  • If you want to test again, ask for the 3 hr but know that you're probably going to pay out of pocket for it like you're saying.

  • I opted to go straight for the 2 hr test so I wouldn't have to take the test twice. I was surprised at how high my glucose levels got. Retaking the test probably wouldn't really help you unless you actually ate before the test and screwed yourself over. I was in a bit of a denial over the results, esp how my glucose went up after 2 hrs instead of down - until yesterday I met with a dietition and had a go at the blood checker. My blood sugar seriously spikes on just about any carbs I'm taking in. I think it even spikes if I look at bread.

You should be assigned with a dietition to advice you on food intake if you still don't know where to start, I'd suggest calling them up and ask more questions. This is my first week with the tool, i was told to experiment with food and check my glucose until I get the hang of it.

We're in the final stretch, eat well for the baby!

  • Thanks to all of you!! I've now been checking my glucose levels and they seem to be at good levels. So would I still be considered to have GD? I do have an appt with a dietician in a week and will ask more questions then.
  • Keep checking them... Are they good because of dietary changes?
