So Many Choices. Baby Shopping

So last night my husband asked if we could go to BBB and look around. Wow. This is our first child and the amount of stuff there was overwhelming. My husband really enjoyed being able to play with the floor models of strollers, cribs, and baby carriers.

Obviously I won't be buying anything or making a registry for a while, but do any Moms have advice on what to buy? I see a lot of people on the Bump talk about the Pack and play but I am not seeing the point.

  • I LOVE BBB. I highly suggest picking up a copy of Baby Bargains. They sell it there. It gives you a rundown of what you'll need and compares various brand names and models.

  • I made an Amazon wish list of all my favorite stuff from my 1st two babies. PM me if you would like it - I give it to friends if they ask - it's easier to have a starting point of stuff that you know worked for someone.

My experience with the pack'n play was that we used it as a newborn for the first 6 weeks it was in our bedroom and that's where she slept. After that we used it again from about 6 months to 10 months mostly just to contain her if I needed to shower, or go to the bathroom or run the vacuum. So we didn't use it for again long time, but it did come in handy.

Ok, that at least helps me understand how people use it. Did you take it with you when you travel or no?
  • We used a pnp for the first 6 months as our son's bed so he could stay in our room. We also use it when we travelled, visited family, or for playing while we took the dog out. Mostly it was used as a travel bed. My favorite site was Lucy's list.

I have heard of this book. Maybe I will get it for husband since he is super into planning
  • I used it when we travelled and I needed a safe place for the baby to sleep.

Ok, we do travel a lot as many of our friends and family are far away. I figure it could sleep in the car seat when it is little but hadn't figured out beyond that
  • Just another tidbit. There's a place called "lucie's list" and it emails you a list of baby supplies, brands, and reviews. I found it very helpful and easy to use!

  • We used a bassinet in our room for the first 6 months. After that she moved to her crib in the nursery. We bought everything from the crib, dresser, changing table, stroller, etc on Amazon.
  • We still use the PNP at 18 months. He naps in it in our room during the day and we also take it to grandparents' house for overnight trips. I still put him in it right outside the bathroom when I shower if hubby isn't home. It's a great containment tool if you need to do something like that where you can't see the kid for a few minutes.

@ChristyM87‌ a car seat isn't considered a safe place for baby to sleep outside of being in a car. If the angle isn't right when it's just sitting on the ground it can cause babys airways to become blocked where the baby can't breathe and increases the risk of SIDS. Their necks just are strong enough

  • I second the Baby Bargains book recommendation. They list out the most recommended item by price point. It's overwelming at first. But wgat I did was just take it one section at a time. I would spend a few days researching cribs, reading the section and reading reviews on Amazon. Then once I decided on a crib, I would move on to something else.

  • We still use our pnp at two years. He sits and drinks his milk and watches his cartoon while I shower in the morning. I know some babies that never liked to be contained but my ds loves his and it's been a life saver.
