Cloth Diapering

Diaper Pails

Hi,
This is my first child and I intend on mostly clothe diapering. But plan on using disposables for long road trips, outings, and possibly night time.

I'm trying to find a good diaper pail. I'd like one to contain the odor, that will fit my own kitchen bags (to save money), or also fit a clothe washable collection bag. I'm thinking I might need to buy two different ones....one for clothe and one for disposables.

I found a Playtex diaper genie elite for a good price and was wondering your thought and experience with it. Should it only be used with disposables or can a cloth bag be attached to it?

Like I said earlier this is my first baby so I really have now idea what I should get. Any suggestions will be very helpful.

  • Yup.  What they said.
I will say though that an open can will also help with stinky disposables too(though obviously they don't go in the same can as the cloth diapers).
We just use one of those kitchen trash cans where you step on the lever and the lid comes up.  We leave the lid off, but wanted one with a lid in case we want to use it for the kitchen once our child is potty trained.  Sometimes we put the lid on if we have company over, since the diaper pail is in our living room.
Our disposable pail is just a standard small trash bin.  We use the plastic grocery bags as liners for that one.  We empty it weekly, and while it definitely gets a bit whiffy toward the end of the week, it never really gets too stinky.
  • I got a $5 open can from Walmart and have 2 Kissaluvs pail liners for it.  Zero stink issues.  Air is good for CDs.

ETA: The can is the 13-gal kitchen trash size.

We have the exact same set-up!

Does it truly not smell if you leave the lid off, or does it just not smell as bad?

If it smells you have a washing problem, IMO. My diaper pail is literally less than 2feet from my dining room table. Don't think we could have it that close and eat if it stunk.

Good to know, thank you @PipSqueak0313‌ ! We haven't actually started CD yet, but my husband was sure there was no way we could have an open bag or pail and not have a house that smells like poop.
  • I find overnight diapers are a little stronger smelling, even with the pail lid off, but nothing over powering, but DS is almost 2.5. Our experience was that during the EBF stage the poop wasn't that strong or offensive smelling; we would just toss the dirty diaper directly in the pail with no rinsing or scraping, but it really didn't leave a noticeable odor in the room. Once DS started solids, we started spraying the diapers, so there's nothing to stink up the room.
  • If you are planning to use disposables, I would go with a diaper champ (do they still make these? I had one 7 years ago with my older 2, before I went to cloth with my 3rd). It took regular garbage bags, and did an ok job with stink.... until it was garbage day, then blech! That smell was way worse than any cloth diaper smell.
We actually toss wet diapers in a small laundry basket next to the changing table. Poopy diapers get rinsed and placed in a bin by the washer, so there isn't any stinky diaper smell in the house at all.
  • We use the ubbi diaper pail, with the Planet Wise diaper pail liner. No smell issues here! I'm sure these ladies know what they're talking about more than I do, but we have a tiny apartment, and I don't really want used diaps hanging around two feet from my bed.

  • Thank you so much for all the input and recommendations. :)
  • The CDs still smell if you have them open, but you get used to the smell. I didn't realize it until a guest told me (she's a good friend and I'm glad she said something). The disposables did always smell worse though so we used just tossed them into our regular trash that went out daily. In a diaper genie or other diaper pail, you're more tempted to leave it until it fills up.
  • Yeah mine don't smell either. The only time they did was when I needed to tweak my wash routine. (I was using liquid All F&C.)

  • Yeah, mine only smelled when I moved and started laundering in hard water. Once I adjusted my routine the smell went away. Sometimes I notice a mild smell at the bottom of the pail liner when I empty it into the washer, but it's not a consistent problem.

I find it greatly amusing that AM has wash issues and stinky diapers and doesn't seem to think that that's a problem.
They didn't stink after they were washed. The small bit off poop and urine smelled when left for more than an hour. There's a reason why we flush the toilet every time we go. It's not because of the yellow color, it's to get rid of the smell (and sanitary reasons).
  • 8-| Not even worth the potential argument. OP, if you have a good wash routine your diapers won't smell. Or all my friends and family are assholes and don't clue me in on my stinky house.
No kidding, clean diapers shouldn't smell?!?!? smh Obviously if a clean diaper smells there is something wrong. Once the baby isn't exclusively bf, those poopy diapers smell no matter how much you try to spray them off. Unless you are also using a cleaner/chemical to also spray each one before putting it into the pail
  • I can still say that my diaper pail doesn't stink enough to interfere with our ability to eat at our table a couple feet away nor does it cause my adult dd to complain and she complains about having to walk past my adult son's bedroom due to the smell of dirty clothes/stinky sneakers in his room. FWIW, I don't use chemicals on my poopy diapers nor do I have a sprayer. I also have the local school district EI team coming to my house weekly. Do you seriously expect me to believe they would stay quiet about a stinky diaper pail while sitting on the floor next to my table, aka <10 feet from the diaper pail?

Nope. No stink in the diaper pail. My baby's poopy butt smells like poop, then I spray off the dirty diaper with water, put it wet in the open pail and wash everything EOD and nothing smells. I get a couple seconds of smell when I dump in the wash, but that literally is it. A couple weeks into CDing MH (who has a nose like a pregnant lady), commented that our living room smelled a little from the diapers, so we tweaked our routine and no smell since. If your dirty diapers smell in the pail it is because they are not getting clean enough (both bacteria and ammonia can get reactivated from the liquid in pee, which is why your "clean" diapers don't smell).

Diapers in the diaper pail also can start smelling with in adequate air flow which is why open pails are recommended over closed pails.....my understanding anyway.
