Infant Baby wearing

I was poking around the attachment parenting board since that seamed to be the best place to find advice.  Curious with you ladies too.  How many of you are baby wearers?  When did you start and what did you use?  Did you wait until baby was here before picking a method to see what they liked?

I would very much like to baby wear as early as is possible, but I don't love the idea of the slings which seems to be one of the more popular methods in the first few months.  I saw there is a normal baby carrier that has an infant insert, so I'm going to research that a bit, but curious to hear from others, especially from a wider range then those who follow attachment parenting.

Re: Infant Baby wearing

  • I'm a FTM but I am so excited about baby wearing!!!  I have a few different types of wraps and carriers and have joined a local group.  I figure I can't carry two babies in my arms at all times, so I need this as an option.

  • Ttm, my first two lived in carriers their first year. I hate pushing strollers. I like a moby for the first couple months. There is a learning curve to tying it, but once you get it, it's really cuddly. I also feel it is a lot easier to nurse in the moby. I like ergo type carriers for a non newborn. This baby though it looks like we are moving to Florida when she is just a couple weeks so I am looking into a linen Mai tai because it will be cooler. Definitely avoid carriers like the bjorn and be careful of pocket slings. It can be difficult to safely position a newborn in a pocket sling, especially if it doesn't fit quite right.
  • I wore DS for the first 6-7 months in a Moby and plan to do the same for this LO. Some people don't like it because it can get really hot and like PP said, there is a bit of a learning curve with it. But I loved it and I didnt feel like DS was going to fall out like I did with the ring sling my mom got me.

  • Wore DD in a moby as well the first few months. When she got a bit heavier moved to a Didymos (a little warm for florida in the summer but a nice wrap). Once she got to that annoying walking, I want to get down/I want to get up stage moved to a Tula.

I wanted to try to Boba wrap, but everyone is sold out! Is the Boba wrap no more?

  • I used a moby to begin with. I really liked it and H used it too. Then I went to a ring sling which I felt had a big learning curve. It took me awhile to get a good seat. Now I wrap, use a ring sling, and a soft structure carrier. H knows how to use the moby, ring slings, and soft structure carrier but mainly uses the soft structure carrier.

Wearing infants is the best thing ever!  I can go on and on about it so if you have questions about any particular type/brand feel free to ask.

My recommendation is to go to a local baby wearing meeting if you have one.  That way you can actually see/touch/wear the different types of carriers and see what you like best (check out babywearing international to find a local chapter).  They encourage pregnant mommas to come and usually have a weighted doll for you to use to try everything out with.  If you're not into the ring sling, I would recommend either a soft structured carrier such as an Ergo, or a wrap.  Moby wraps are great for the cuddly newborn stage but once the baby is over 15 pounds they tend to sag a lot and are hard to use comfortably and safely.  If you are interested in wrapping, you can invest in a woven wrap for under $100 and it will last you through the toddler years.

  • I'm going to use a ring sling or K'Tan until she's big enough for the Ergo.

  • Does anyone have any experience with the Beco Gemini?  The company says it works for newborns as small as 7lbs and up to 35lbs with front and back carrying options.  I liked the idea of the back support so I could continue using it when LO gets bigger.

  • I tried the Maya sling w/DS but couldn't get a good feel for it.  Wasn't crazy about the Moby wrap (though those who used it rave about it).  We used the Boba 4G carrier when he was bigger.

With this baby, I've tried on the Boba Wrap and plan to use this.  I like that it's stretchier material (unlike the other wraps) and the wrapping seems easier.

Ergo, K'Tan, Becco are also great.  HATE the Bjorn as they still advertise infant forward-facing.

  • I used the Moby very early on last time. It was awesome. Makes the baby feel very secure. The only down side is it was hot. DS is a June baby. This time I plan on using it even more since it won't be so hot. YouTube videos are the best for learning how to put it on.

We started using the Ergo around 3-4 months and continued until DS was almost 18 months. He didn't like being on my back and he just got to heavy for me. But he loved it.

I got a used Beco Gemini this time, cause I wanted the option to wear baby face forward when old enough. I have heard all good things.

My other goal this time is to nurse in all carriers. I never got the hang of that last night.

  • Exactly what @WanderingA‌ said re: babywearing groups-my local one is having a newborn wearing workshop on Monday night and I am hoping to go! I personally want a Tula-I think they are so cute but am hoping to try some different ones on Monday night. Kinderpacks are pretty popular but tough to get your hands on one, they only release them once a week.

  • I love my Moby for the newborn stage! After that I will move to a Tula or Boba (soft structured carrier).

  • I really liked my Boba for DS (until I got PG and my belly got too big!) I started using it on him at a really young age, might have been newborn.
  • I got a awesome deal on a used ring sling, ktan, and mei tai from a lady off craigslist, I'm excited to try different things. I'm also planning on getting the Beco Gemini

  • I didn't read the other responses but I have the Balboa Baby sling, a Moby wrap, and an Ergo.  I absolutely love the Ergo and have the newborn insert but didn't purchase it until after DD was 4 months so I don't know about early infant stages. It was super easy to use and very comfortable.  The sling was nice but hurt your shoulder after awhile. The Moby was also really comfortable it just took a little while for me to get how to tie it but there are tons of youtube videos.

  • Thanks everyone! This is really helpful, and I didn't think about finding a baby wearing group. I'll check that out in my area.

I agree with this! Babywearing international is awesome!
I used a moby for my first when she was a baby, it was okay, but I was never in love. I bought a beco Gemini when she was a little bit older and LOVE it! I bought a k'tan with my second and I couldn't get it tight enough, first I bought a large, because I'm chunky, it was huge, exchanged it for a medium and it was still too loose, and they wouldn't let me exchange it again, so I sold it. I then found Babywearing international and checked out a maya ring sling and fell in love! I used it for two months until my lady fit well in the Gemini.
A maya ring sling was my first purchase for this new baby! I can't wait to wear a newborn again!!!
  • Yay there is a baby wearing group in the next over from mine! Thanks so much for the suggestion!
