Half Marathon

Good morning ladies!!!

I have my first half marathon coming up Dec 6th. I'm scared to death I won't make the three hour deadline. I have trained hard but now I'm thinking I shoulda, coulda, woulda. Is this normal?!?!

Ran most of my long runs outside. The cold weather does a number on my lungs after I get warm. Like a weird dry cough. Normal?!?!

I have my outfit pick out ran 11 miles in it outside. Felt comfortable and warm. My boobs chafed though so I'll put some body glide on those puppies. Otherwise no other chafing.

I guess my biggest fear is I'll poop my pants. There are only bathrooms at 6.5 miles. That just seems so far from each toilet. I plan on taking Imodium the day before and morning of to ease my mind. Any other tips?!?!

Re: Half Marathon

  • Definitely normal to be having all those jitters!

Cold air makes me cough some as well.  I just try my best to breathe in through my nose and that helps warm it up a bit before it gets to my lungs.  Though at some point, that's just not enough volume of air, and I have to mouth breathe.

As for pooping your pants - I understand the fear, but I don't know that I'd take anything for it for fear of making myself horribly constipated or something.  Have you used Imodium before so you know how it affects you?  I generally find pre-race nerves help clear me out the morning before the race regardless.

My best half marathon was in the cold - you got this lady!

    Good luck!!

I despise the cold, just ran my first half in under 2:45 in the rain with a slight chill and the farthest I ran for training was 6 miles.  You're good to go!

  • Have fun!  I'm sure you'll do great!  The jitters are totally normal and half the fun, because you're about to prove to yourself that you're way more badass than you ever realized.
  • It will be great! Jitters are totally normal. Honestly if you haven't pooped your pants during a long run yet your body is probably in sync with the distance and keeping it together! I always wear a running belt with tissues in it for emergencies, but I also run a wooded route so it's easy to find a place if necessary. I would not take immodium if you have done this before, I never know how things will affect my body!

The cough is totally normal. I get a hint of asthma returning when it's cold and I run a long distance. It couldn't hurt to see your doc and just get an inhaler of albuterol just in case. I forgot to bring mine to the marathon and I got very emotional at the end and it caused me to have a coughing fit. A puff or two would have solved that!

If you are getting chafing I use Vaseline if I need it. It works as well as the body glide stuff for me and it's way cheaper and in my cabinet already.

Have a great race, you will feel so accomplished when you are done!

  • Good luck! I have no advice but my goal is to work my way up to a half. I have my first 10k this Sunday and a 15k in Feb. I'm nervous about the pooping thing too. Lol

  • You'll do great!!!  Just let the pre-race jitters work the poo out for you and you'll be fine!  And not to add to your nervousness, but my friend in high school took immodium before a track meet, and it backfired (literally) and she pooped her pants running the 200m.  If it happens, it happens, people will just think you're really hardcore!
  • Good luck!
Not a runner, but just wanted to pop in to say that in my head, I totally pronounce you new sn as Jess-a-bee.

  • Good luck!!

Like others have said- if you can run 11 you are golden for 13.1. My longest training run was only 10 and I beat my goal time for my first half. And totally smart to do some long runs outside- I did a lot of my training on a treadmill (it rained almost everyday while I was training) and paid dearly on race day- it rained then and was cold and I wasn't really ready for that.

And personally, unless you are having tons of bathroom issues on your long training run, I would avoid taking anything for the poop factor.

Good luck!! Keep us posted come race day.

  • You guys are the best! Thanks for reassuring me about the run and the great tips. I should trust my training. I think your right about the Imodium and will not take that. It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one with that same fear.

I don't mind running in the cold but my last run was 18 degrees while snowing. Slipped a little here and there but nothing major. Better than running in 80 degrees IMO.

I will keep you ladies posted how it goes. I don't have a goal time in mind but mostly to finish. Well I guess not to die. Thanks again!!!

@amberdt03‌ I did my 10k in June and swore that was my max miles. It's amazing how quickly the mind changes. Good luck!

@Cricket81‌ Love the name! I should change it again :)
