Flu Shots Anyone?

Is anyone getting or have you already had a flu shot?  If so, did you consult with your doctor before doing so?

I'm only 4w1d & debating about getting a flu shot next weekend.  We'll be taking a long haul international flight at the end of the year and I'm quite worried about the germs flying over & back home.

Re: Flu Shots Anyone?

  • Call your ob. Mine gives the flu shot at your first 8 week appointment.

  • I got mine before I got pregnant. If you decide to get it next weekend, get the preservative free shot.

My OB gave me a shot in his office while I was there. I'm not a huge fan of flu shots (for no other reason than they are so new and controversial) but based on the information he gave me, I felt it was safe for me and the baby.
  • Got mine from my midwife at my appt on wednesday! She recommended it for all of her patients, unless you gave reason to believe you are allergic to it. I've never gotten one, but am definitely not taking a chance on it this year!
  • There is already a thread about this with lots of opinions, But yes I got my flu shot around the 4th week per my doctors recommendation.

  • I had gotten mine prior to getting pregnant but there should not be an issue with you getting it regardless of how far along you are.

Now just waiting until I am farther along to get my TDaP booster
  • Yep.  My doctor told me too, and to make sure it was preservative free.

  • My OB says I need to wait until the second trimester. So hoping I don't get the flu for a few weeks.

  • I didnt get it with DD and I probably won't this time. I'm not one to get sick. I did get the whooping cough vaccine when pregnant with DD... and DD got the flu shot last week.

  • I got mine back in August when DS got his. If you get it in first tri make sure it's the preservative free one. If not you're better off waiting til 2nd tri.

Just wondering why he told you to wait until the 2nd trimester? Did he say why? I feel like my doctor couldn't get it in my arm fast enough.
  • Yep, my OB gave me mine yesterday.

  • My OB recommended that I go ahead and get it done, so during my first apt they gave it to me.

  • I got mine on Tuesday. I work in healthcare and made sure to mention I was pregnant when getting the shot and they said it was perfectly safe. My ultrasound was two days later and baby is perfect.

  • I've never gottent the flu shot (or the flu to my knowledge) and am worried about a bad reaction. This is the only situation I'm in not seriously pro-vaccine. Please correct me if I'm wrong but the flu shot doesn't prevent you from getting the flu, but instead is likely to lessen the severity of the flu should you contract it? Maybe?

  • This year's shot protects against 4 strains of flu including the H1N1 which they predict will make a comeback this year (correct me if I'm wrong healthcare professionals!)
  • I got mine back in Sept, so before I was pregnant, but got it while pregnant with my other two.  I just went to Walgreens, you can request preservative free.
  • I have never had a flu shot before so I'm really glad you posted this it's good to get the opinions...I'm a teacher and definitely think I should talk to my doctor at my next appt

You could always just call and ask your office recommendation, my guess is they will encourage you to get one.  It takes 2 weeks for the shot to be fully effective and we are now in flu season!
  • I had my flu shot the month before we TTC. I went to my doctor for a check up and he said he may as well give me the shot then since I was in the office and that any antibodies would just transfer to the baby.

  • I have been pregnant or BFing the past 4 (or maybe 5) flu seasons. Every one of those years, I have gotten the flu shot.

It's recommended pregnant women get the flu shot - https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pdf/freeresources/pregnant/flushot_pregnant_factsheet.pdf. But as always, consult your doc.

  • This year I received mine before I found out I was expecting.. but in past pregnancies, I have receved them while pregnant.  Highly recommended by physicians..but always safe to check with your doc...
  • I never get a flu shot and my OB strongly suggested I get it asap because you're immune system is weakened while pregnant therefore making it easier for you to catch the flu and it will be harder on your body making a baby, trying to keep baby safe, and getting you well again.
