Gift Ettiquitte

My sister in law is adopting a baby and someone is having a baby shower for her in a couple weeks. I didn't think she was going to have a shower (second child) so I already gave her a gift. Do I still go to the shower? Is it acceptable to go and not take another gift?

Re: Gift Ettiquitte

  • I would still try to go to the shower and maybe just give her something small. Are you crafty? You can try to make something sentimental that won't be costly. Likely, she hasn't forgotten you'd already given her something. Has she sent you a thank you already? She may even wait until after the shower and send them all at once anyway.

You can go without a gift. I wouldn't feel obligated to give another gift, but if you feel uncomfortable going without bringing something, you can bring a small gift.
  • I would bring something. Maybe a nice blanket or a nice outfit for the baby. But I wouldn't go over board.

  • I'd probably end up bring a favorite book

  • So it sounds like the general consensus is that I should bring something. That is what I was afraid of. It's not that I mind getting her another gift. It is just that the shower is 1 1/2 hours from here, I have to find child care for DS, and now I have to come up with another cute gift. I guess I am just worn out today and that all sounds like a lot of work when I am going to see them and meet the new baby over Thanksgiving anyway.

(Sorry for my negativity. It has been a long week.)
  • why cant you take ds with you? most baby showers ive been to let you brinkids.

  • I would bring something, maybe a cute outfit. Adoption is scary, especially depending on the laws of where you live or where the child was born so maybe a card that lets her know you offer a lot of support.

  • I would take DS.  My shower had 5 children and they were totally fine, even grabbing the dog and popping balloons and acting like fools.

You need to go.  Take a tiny gift and it doesn't have to be cutesy.  My sister came to ALL FOUR of my baby showers (only 1 was my idea!) and at each one she brought something small.  To the main shower, she brought her real present.

Small presents she brought - cute paci clips and a cool stroller clip organizer thing ($15), two sleepers ($18), etc.

    Get her useful things!

  • You could even get her a gift card to put in a card so she can grab some last minute essentials once the baby is here. They're easy to pick up, even on your way there.
