I thought it'd be interesting to see where everyone is, sleep wise with their LOs. Now that majority have reached 4m or are approaching - I know a lot of things have changed in regard to sleeping patterns, routines...etc and I wanna hear what's working for you now
. I know the 4 month sleep regression post has been blowing up so your norm might now be so norm now, but with that said:
Where is LO sleeping and what are they sleeping in?
Are you still swaddling? What kind of swaddle?
Longest stretch at night?
How many naps during the day?
Have you established a bedtime routine?
Re: 4 Month Check In - Sleep Edition
Pack n play next to our bed. Planning to transition to her crib in the next few weeks. I don't know why I'm dreading it.
Are you still swaddling? What kind of swaddle?
We quit swaddling 2.5weeks ago. We had the same possessed arms problem. The first couple nights were rough, but thankfully she has adapted really well.
Longest stretch at night?
She usually goes 9pm to 4am like clockwork then needs to eat and goes back to sleep until anywhere between 6 and 8.
How many naps during the day?
We are terrible at a nap routine. She's getting better, but we are still pretty inconsistent. We just let her sleep where and when she wants to.
Have you established a bedtime routine?
At 8:30 we put her in a 12hr diaper with desitin, sleeper and sleepsack. Then she gets Zantac, nurses and goes to bed. On Sun/Wed/Fri she gets a bath at 8pm.
For bedtime I put him in his sleep sack and nurse until he's drowsy. Then we move him upstairs. If he wakes, then we out on music in dark bedroom.
His crib in his room. Usually fleece Pjs or a sleep sack.
Are you still swaddling? What kind of swaddle?
No
Longest stretch at night?
6 hours or so, eat, then back to sleep for about 4 hours
How many naps during the day?
Usually 2 good naps and a couple of car naps, or that's what I hear from MIL, anyway.
Have you established a bedtime routine?
We do bath (every 3rd day or so), diaper, lotion and pjs, then reading a few books with daddy, then eat and rock. By then he's usually out. The whole thing takes an hour or so.
DS is sleeping in his PNP in our room. Planning on transitioning him to his crib in the next month or two. Don't actually have a crib yet, as we are currently in a temporary apartment, awaiting our move to our new house next week (finally!)
Nope, he only used a swaddle for about a month. We use jammies (starting to use the warmer fleecy jammies from Carters now that the temps are plummeting), and a Grobag sleep sack.
he still doesn't sleep the whole night through, but will generally go 10-12 hours, waking up once or twice for MOTN feeds. He goes back to bed really easily though.
this, here, is our problem. We have no established nap routine, due to coming back from an overseas move and not being in our new house yet. With everything we have been going through, we never established putting DS into his crib to nap, and now he won't do it
Somewhat. We haven't yet established a time, but it's usually between 7 and 9. We dress him in his jammies and sleep sack, feed him, have some cuddle time, read some stories, throw in a bath every 3-4 days, but none of this is in a particular order! I am hoping to have more of a routine once we finally get settled.
my husband and I lived in the UK for 4 years because of his work. We started packing up our house over there in May, DS was born in July, we moved to a temporary apartment in the UK in September, flew back to the US Oct 1 to a temporary apartment here, and will move to our permanent place the end of this month. So it's been a bit crazy around here! I'm sure the stress levels aren't helping poor DS either :-/
2. No. Right from day 1 she never liked having her hands restrained so she was never swaddled.
3. One time about a month ago she slept 6 hrs, but usually it's 2 1/2 - 3 hrs with the occasional 4 hr stretch if I'm lucky.
4. Before the time change we had a perfect napping routine, then it it super messed up and she started fighting her naps and would get super cranky in the evening. Now we are finally starting to get back into a routine and around 830 am she takes her first nap, sleeps between 30 - 40 min and then naps about every 2 hrs or so.
5. It used to be that she'd nap from 730 - 8 and then around 9 I would feed her in the rocking chair in her room until she fell asleep and I would put her in her crib for the night. The past week or so she wouldn't wake up from her 730 nap so I've been taking her up to her room around 715 and she eats until she sleeps then goes in her crib. When DH was off work (he went back when she was about 2 months old) we were bathing her during the day and I've kept doing that since he's gone back but once she's settled into a 730 bedtime I am going to start bathing her right before the last feeding before bed to incorporate that into the routine.
Eta - it kept posting before I was finished!
Where is LO sleeping and what are they sleeping in? He's in his room in the Rock N Plan. We're working on the whole getting him to sleep flat thing.
DD has been in her crib since day 1. She normally sleeps in footie PJs.
Are you still swaddling? What kind of swaddle?
She sleeps in a Zipadee Zip every night. She loves it and it has been a lifesaver for sleep.
Longest stretch at night?
She routinely sleeps 7-8 hours in one stretch, with a few shorter and few longer stretches here and there.
How many naps during the day?
Normally 3
Have you established a bedtime routine?
Yes, we started that early too. Every other night, she takes a bath, puts on lotion and gets into her jammies. We put her in the Zipadee Zip and depending on the last time she ate, she may get a bottle. Then it's some rocking and a lullaby and down for the night around 6:30-7.
In her crib in footed pj's.
Are you still swaddling? What kind of swaddle?
She loved the swaddle. I had been doing 1 arm out since about 3 months but everytime I tried to take the second arm out it was disaster. We got merlins suit but after our 4mo pedi appt decided to go cold turkey on the sleepsuit and the paci (we were getting up multiple times a night when she definitely wasn't hungry just to out the paci in). The first night or two was rough but she's great now and I'm happy we're rid of it.
Longest stretch at night?
Usually 730pm - 4am. Eats then back down til 730 am or so. However it's so variable - that's the most common but she changes it up. Last night she was up at 1130pm, ate at 2, and woke up for the day at 6am. I can't wait til I can count on something more consistent.
How many naps during the day?
Normally 3. But maybe 2 depending on length. For naps we still use merlins suit and she gets her paci to fall asleep. After the nighttime routine is in place I'll work on dropping the swaddle and paci for naps.
She was the queen of the 30-45 minute catnaps. However we went cold turkey on the swaddle at night, started putting her down for the night awake (crying the first couple nights but great since) and naps have improved tremendously. For the last week I consistently get a 2.5 hour morning nap from about 930-12. And then a couple short afternoon naps.
Have you established a bedtime routine?
Yes, we started that early. Bath at 630pm. Then story, bottle. After that lights off, sound machine on rock for a few minutes and into the crib about 730pm. She falls asleep usually within 15 minutes.
Swaddle? Sort of. She'd always slept in a Velcro SwaddleMe until she started rolling about a month ago. BUT she's always slept so well swaddled and still has the startle reflex so I switched to the Halo Swaddle Sack. She's currently sleeping with one arm in and one arm out. The first couple of nights we did this she was harder to get down. I'd have to nurse/hold for 20-30 minutes/put her down 2-3 times before she'd really be down without startling herself back awake. Luckily, once she was down she stayed asleep. Now I only have to redo the nurse/hold/transfer routine a couple of times a week. Last night she rolled over and then freaked out as soon as I set her down the first time.
Longest stretch? She's always been a great sleeper - we are so lucky. She currently sleeps about 10 hours at night (8:30p-6:30a).
How many naps? Four, but they're short. 45 minutes usually, maybe an hour once a day. Naps typically around 8:30a, 11a, 2p, and 5p. She naps exclusively in the swing with paci & white noise (unless she falls asleep in the car seat/stroller). It's weird that she needs the paci, white noise, and motion to nap since she doesn't need any of these things at night.
Bedtime routine? Yes. Bath every 2-3 nights, diaper, pajamas, reads 2-3 books with her big brothers, then into Halo sack, nurses in a mostly dark & quiet room until she's out and I transfer her to the crib.
LO has been sleeping in his crib since 2.5 months. He sleeps in footed pajamas
Are you still swaddling? What kind of swaddle?
Yes A&A with one arm out...going to try to start transition of no Swaddle this weekend maybe
Longest stretch at night? 8:30pm-6:45am without waking up
How many naps during the day? Two naps ...around 10am and 2pm for about 45 mins
Have you established a bedtime routine? Yes
Bath, lotion, book bottle and bed
Crib but pedi said if she's not staying asleep (see below), put her in whatever she'll sleep in (swing/RnP)
Are you still swaddling? What kind of swaddle?
Haven't swaddled since she was 2 weeks. However we wrap her burrito style (arms out) in a blanket at night.
Longest stretch at night?
In the past two months the longest she's gone is 3 hours. A typical night for us is: Sleep 2 hours
awake/up & down 2-4 hours
Sleep 2 hours
Awake for the day
How many naps during the day?
1, 2 on a good day. I have a child that will not nap!
Have you established a bedtime routine?
Bath, pjs and lotion massage, books and cuddles, nurse/rock, sleep.
LO wears footed jams, mostly, but if hes in a clean onesie Ill leave him. He has never been swaddled, always wanted his arms out. He wears a swaddleme or halo sleepsack arms out as a blanket. He has his own spaceheater because his room is the coldest in the house, so I dont really need to put him in super warm clothes. He does need mittens though, because his hands are always frozen.
He always was an every 3 hours waker but last night was about 6 hours... a miracle.
Naps can vary, it depends if Im out. He sleeps like a rockstar in the carseat. At home at least for me he does 3-4 naps, 30-45 min. But if hes in the carseat I can get 3 hours.
Bedtime routine is around 8-830 (at least when Im home, DH sometimes goes later if hes not cranky so I might be able to see him when I get home) we go up, he gets nighttime cloth diaper and blanket. If hes not a crankasaurus, he gets a book. After I rock and nurse. Ill put him down when hes finished, still awake, and most of the time thats it... sometimes he wants more snuggles and I dont care, Ill do it. Momma loves it too :-)
We use the Swaddle Me to swaddle her arms but just bought one of those Merlin's sleep suit things.
She sleeps 8-10 hours straight through at night.
Naps are irregular. Usually sometime between 2 and 4 and occasionally around 7 or 8. DH starts putting her to bed around 9:30.
DH will give her a bottle, put on white noise, and rock her a little. She will sleep until I come home from work at 11:30 and then I nurse her to sleep. She does the 8-10 hour stretch after that.

Where is LO sleeping and what are they sleeping in?
She's been sleeping in her crib in her room since 4 weeks.
Are you still swaddling? What kind?
Haven't swaddled in about a month but she's been sleeping in foot pjs and a zippadee zip.
Longest stretch at night?
She use to sleep 10 hours and rarely need a MOTN feeding. For the past 2 weeks she's been inconsistent wih at least one MOTN feeding. I think she's going through a growth spurt and she popped 2 teeth. The past 2 nights she's been up every 2.5 hours starting at 7pm and up for the day around 7am. She feeds everytime she gets up like she's been starving for days and goes back to sleep pretty easily. We are trying to work through it but I go back to work after thanksgiving and hoping she gets back on track soon.
How many naps during the day?
She use to not really nap with any type of schedule but has been pretty consistently napping about 1.5 hours after she eats during the day. She naps for about an hour 3 times a day.
Have you established a bedtime routine?
Bath, lotion, pjs, 5oz bottle of breastmilk followed by 15 min of nursing (she's definitely going through a growth spurt haha) and bed.
Mom to one beautiful July '14 little girl
Yes! Me too! Totally jealous and sad. But I'll tell you what I get sick of people telling me..."it will get better." lol
Where is LO sleeping and what are they sleeping in?
We have apparently gone backwards in my house. She was in the sleeper attachment of the PNP and then in the regular part of the PNP and as of this week she is in the Little Lounger (graco's version of the RNP). I'm getting the longest sleep stretches I have in a month and a half, but it still makes me nervous I'm giving her horrible sleep habits I can't break later. She also has had a cold last week and this week and I think it helps with the drainage to be at an angle.
This week she is in a fleece halo sleepsack.
Are you still swaddling? What kind of swaddle?
We stopped swaddling around 3 months. We were using the Sleep Suit and liked that, but since she's in the RNP she sleeps in just a sleep sack great so I haven't messed with it in 2 weeks.
Longest stretch at night? 7 hours last weekend. It was glorious.
How many naps during the day? I'm honestly not sure since SIL or DH has her during the day. I think about 2 or 3.
Have you established a bedtime routine? Not a good one, but we do put on her sleep clothes and I nurse her and she cuddles with me. I need to do more regular bathes. When she is a little older we will do books.
