Should I change doctors?

I would really appreciate some input... I know I haven't participated much but this really pissed me off.

I have been seeing my OBGYN for a couple years before getting pregnant for other issues. She is an hour drive away from my work and depending on traffic 40-60min drive from home.

I have seen her 4 times since being pregnant. They have called to reschedule my appointment 3 times with only a couple days notice. I work full time and it is really hard for me to book off time to go to the doctors because I have patients that book-in weeks ahead to see me. My doctor doesn't work very much it seems as it is a struggle to find a time to see her where I don't have to take too much time off work.

I was supposed to go see my doctor for my glucose test on Tuesday (I have already booked time off work) and now they changed it to Wednesday a half hour before I start work- they called and left a message yesterday and said they were closing for the weekend.

I am trying to work as much as possible before taking time off because I am self employed and do not get any benefits or paid time off for mat leave.

Should I change doctors? Look for one closer? I am 26 weeks- do you think it's too late to change? I really like her but can't keep changing my schedule last minute. Is this just part of being pregnant and I should just suck if up and make more consessions?

Re: Should I change doctors?

  • Never too late to change.  See who is closer to you in-network and call first if they'll accept new pts.  See them first to determine if s/he is a good fit.  If so, it's easy to have your old records transferred to the new office.

Have you discussed the multiple rescheduling with her?  Is she in solo practice & having to cancel to attend deliveries?

  • It is late in the game to choose docs but you are going to start having many more appointments and it doesn't seem feasible to continue.

  • I would definitely change Docs. Look for someone closer, perhaps an OB team - so if one OB isn't available, you can see another OB within the same practice.

  • I am in a similar situation as you and also very much considering changing docs. Mine is 25 min away so not too bad but they are always, always late by nearly an hour. Like you I am working full time, usually 6 days a week, and appts are difficult.

Is she the only practitioner at the office or are there others more organized? If its a solo deal then I would certainly switch to someone that is more organized. I figure if I can't get to work to make money I can't pay them. Andplusalso my time should be respected.

  • It is a little late, but I would still make a change if you can. You don't deserve to deal with the hassle of constantly changing appointments. That is ridiculous IMO - and you are about to have A LOT more appointments in the coming weeks.

  • What is there reason for constantly re-scheduling? Have you let them know what an inconvenience it has been.  I would change if it was me.

  • I agree with all of the PP's--make the change, and now. Sorry you're having to deal with it, but ultimately it will probably be better if you can find someone closer to you anyway. Good luck!

  • Thank you for all the advice. I will be looking into a new doctor. Nothing out of the ordinary about my pregnancy so far so I think it might be easy to change. I will also be telling them on Monday how much of an inconvenience it has been to reschedule and ask to be referred to someone closer to home.

Thank you so much! Glad to see that most people would look into changing doctors. Makes me feel better about wanting to change.
  • I changed at 26 weeks last pregnancy. It's hard to realize what a practice/office is like when you're only going every so often (or like me once a year for paps). Once you're pregnant and have lots of exposure to the practice you learn what YOU need from your doc.

Good luck with the switch! :)

You should def let them know that they will be loosing a patient because of this.  If it is a good practice with a strong reputation they will def want to look into what the issue has been.  My mother worked at a large dental practice and they were loosing patients because of same reason.  When they looked into it they were finding that one of the receptionists kept messing up the schedule.  They let her go and found someone better and it completely stopped.  If patients hadn't have told them their reason for leaving they never would have really known.

  • I would change. I was kinda in the same boat (my OB moved away and the new OB was "meh") driving 1hr to apts, running SO behind, affecting my hubby's work schedule, etc...I changed and LOVE my new OB! It could be all for the better! Good luck
  • I would definitely change and let them know the reason for the switch.  You can't be the only patient feeling this way.  I switched from an OB practice to a midwife at 26w with no issues - it's a little late, but the midwife had no problems with it.

  • I too would switch. I also agree with what michelle142 said about going to a practice where there are several doctors that you could see in case your doctor gets called away. This has happened to me a few times and I always get to see another doctor in the practice instead of rescheduling. It also gives you a chance to meet the others in the practice in case they end up doing your delivery (or assisting).
