Thanksgiving Dishes

So ladies I'm curious what are some things you make or your family makes every Thanksgiving that is a tradition for you?

I ask this because yesterday at work was our Thanksgiving dinner and the wide range of foods was interesting to see. I loved see how different everyones idea of a normal dish was.

Some for me would be when I was a kid we always had pickled eggs, candied yams, and dressing balls. We never had stuffing because they had dressing balls which I never ate. They where made out of fresh white bread shredded and cut up with onions and celery and mixed with chicken stock then they where put in balls. They where nasty as hell but my family always fought over them.

At DH's family his grandma makes some kind of stuffing with cornbread and giblet gravy. I'd never heard of giblet gravy until I went to their house for thanksgiving.

So what are your foods?

  • Usually we roast the turkey butterflied on top of the dressing (sausage/mushroom). On the side scalloped potatoes, brussel sprouts with pancetta and pumpkin mocha tart.

We have a big family and usually serve a very large, traditional thanksgiving meal; turkey/ham/stuffing/rolls/mashed pots/greenbeancasserole/gravy/corn/cranberry sauce/stewed tomatoes/salad/Mac n cheese ... but every year we try to sub in a new dish, recently sweet potatoes became a staple (usually baked or as fries, but next year I'm going to try your pie @Stephanie2378‌ !) and this year my sister's FIL is making a shredded Brussels sprouts side w pecans and bacon (unmm, I like bacon, so I'm game). And we get appetizer crazy each year too (jalepeno dip, crab dip, cheese balls, crudités, etc etc etc). Everyone is stuffed by dessert, but there's no shortage of pumpkin and apple pie, sometimes key lime & choc chip pound too, cookies and brownies.

    Love thanksgiving!

  • On my Czech side of the family my grandma always made nadivka (a cracker or bread stuffing), along with the usual thanksgiving dishes. This is a stuffing baked in a dish with several eggs and lots of garlic (carrots, ect). It is very dense and cut into squares. It's so yummy!

On my polish side, we always had fresh polish sausage along with the usuals. And an orange cranberry sauce my grandma made. Otherwise we stick with the green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, turkey, cornbread....drool!

  • I have to admit I don't love most of my family's thanksgiving food. The things everyone else loves that I don't are...
Sweet potato casserole (they use the canned yams and marshmallow topping. Gross.)
    Cornbread dressing
    Corn pudding
    Deviled eggs
Coconut cream and cherry cream pies

I do like the turkey (which is roasted or fried, depending on who is hosting) and the sausage dressing my mom makes when it is her year to host.

I think my family just makes gross things for thanksgiving. Lol. Where are the mac n cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy and other carby deliciousness?!?

This year I will be bringing mashed potatoes and gravy, biscuits and a Dutch apple pie so at least I know I'll have that.

  • For Thanksgiving I usually make fresh green bean casserole (so much better than stuff from cans), pineapple stuffing, amaretto sweet potato casserole (my grandma's recipe was for whiskey but I subbed amaretto), cranberry relish, cranberry shortbread cookies, and some kind of dessert (pumpkin or pecan pie, possibly mint brownies). Other people make the mashed potatoes, stuffing, and rolls. There is turkey, but I don't eat or participate in making it so it's always last on my list ;)

That reminds me we always had deviled eggs to. But since I live in Texas now everyone here puts pickle relish in theres. Which we never did that back in WV. I still think its odd they add that.

I think my family is the only once I've ever met that makes pickled eggs.

  • Ooh, @kefttsc, creamed corn! Why is it SO GOOD?

My family's dishes overlapped largely with what PPs have said above, but we always had one additional dish: "the pickle plate". I don't know why I loved this so much, but all it had was mini gherkin dill pickles, pickled watermelon rind, bread and butter pickles, black olives, and green olives. It was just a neat thing to pass around.
I love ANYTHING that can be pickled!!!

And creamed corn...funny story...the last TWO years it has gone in the microwave to stay warm and we forgot about it!!!  So we all have it after the fact when our plates are clean :)

  • I hate this thread because I am now hungry even though I just ate, again.

@Stephanie2378 My best friend makes that sweet potato casserole and now we have adopted it! Love it.

@RedGiant Normally I use fresh green beans too, but I tried it earlier in the year and I didn't like how it turned out. So I am back to cans.

I LOVE ALL THE THANKSGIVING FOOD!!! And I get 3 this year! AHHHHH

  • Generally it is just four of us, so we don't go all out. We typically have:
    Turkey
    Gravy
    Dressing
    Cranberry sauce
    Deviled eggs
    Corn/green bean casserole
    Sweet potato casserole (sometimes)
  • Turkey, homemade stuffing with carrots and celery, green bean casserole with fresh green beans, fresh cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, mushroom gravy, homemade rolls, a scratch apple pie, scratch pumpkin pie, and fresh whipped cream. My guys are spoiled... And what every stray (single sailor) my husband brings home from the Navy.

  • Every year my mom does turkey, mashed potatoes, cream corn, cranberries and my grandmother's meat stuffing. It's the same filling as a meat pie just without the pie crust

We are going to my sister's house this year for the first time (newlyweds, preg w their first) and her husband is a submariner just back from deployment this week so I think we'll be having a few extra 'strays' over next Thursday for dinner as well :)
  • @Dannylion24‌ we have been married 9 years and I have never had a holiday where we didn't have at least one stray. I really do love having them, they are so grateful to be included somewhere. This year we will be delivering pumpkin roll to the wounded warriors at our base hospital. I'd feed all the strays if I could afford it.

  • I've been making Thanksgiving dinner since I was 12 years old. My mom would always help, but I prepped everything and mostly she put things into the oven haha.
