Perineum Massage

Where you stretch the perinium ready for childbirth. To help prevent tears.. etc.
Has anyone tried this? If so did it help & what did you use to massage (oils..) when did you start and were you as committed to doing it twice daily? It says you need to pull till it burns so im wondering if any women actually done this and swears by this.

Re: Perineum Massage

  • I tried it both pregnancies & I still had tears. So no, it didn't help. The tearing issue has more to do with elasticity & depth of the tissue that you are born with. My midwife even used coconut oil as I pushed & I pushed slowly/carefully. My babies had big heads so that might have been a factor as well.

If you'd like to do it then coconut oil is a decent choice, but olive oil can work too. You can try & see.

  • I did this, and it didn't help! I tore with all three, but they were minor. Like, 1-2 stitches with each one. I also had two 9lb and one 8lb babies.
  • Did this with olive oil.  Had minor tears with DD and none with DS.  With DS the doctor helped to ease him out.  There was none of that "PUSHPUSHPUSHPUSH" nonsense.  With DD I felt like that doctor just kind of stood there, near my vagina.  He didn't really do much.

Bacteria can't grow in olive oil,  which is why it was recommended by my mid-wife.

It can't hurt.  I think it helped me.
  • Thank you i feel like its worth a shot ive never given birth before so anything that may help im deffinetly trying . Also im going to take 5W and evening primrose oil
  • I asked my midwives about this and they said it's fine to try but not to expect anything. Some women tear, some don't. They also encourage slow pushing and use oils, warm compress, and massage when crowning, let the mother support her own perineum, and use water birth. More often than not, their mother's don't tear. But when they do, it is usually very minor. They recommend lots of squats and kegels to improve elasticity and bloodflow to the area and that's what I'm doing and have been throughout the pregnancy.
