April 2015 Moms

Name-related post.

So if this LO is a girl (which I'm kind of hoping for) we plan to use my grandmother's name for a first name. I've always loved her name, Coralie, and am excited my H agreed super easily.

The thing is, Cora is pretty trendy and seems to be getting more popular. I know DH will use Cora (he agreed to the name because last of the Mohicans is his favorite movie) and I don't mind Cora at all.

Would the popularity (that will probably only go up) bother you in naming your child?

  • Not at all. My top pick is incredibly popular but I will always love it
  • I grew up with a girl named coralie, but it was spelt with a K. Always loved the name.
  • Dd has two of my great grandmother's name which happens to be super popular right now. I don't mind.
  • If you love it, go for it. Also, it isn't a name I've heard of before but I think it is really pretty.

  • Honestly, I still haven't met one! It's a great name
    Me: 33 DH: 38
    BFP 1: 10/06/13 // MMC/D&C:12/16/13 (Partial Molar)
    DS: 5/4/15
    BFP 3: 10/26/16//EDD: 7/2/17

  • I'm not one to get worked up over popularity.  It's not like our last name is Smith. We picked our girl and boy name like 6 or 7 years ago (a little before we got engaged) and we still like them. They are both now two of the more popular names, but we don't really care.

Meaning of a name tromps popularity in my book. If you both love it use it.

  • My great aunts named was Corona and I loved that name. I actually haven't heard of the name Coralie before and I think it's beautiful! It's far from trendy here! But if you love it, go for it!
  • Ahhh I LOVE the name Cora! Go with it! So cute :)
  • If you love the name, use it. Cora is gaining popularity....but it's not popular like "Jennifer" or "Emma".

  • My niece'a name is Coraline but everyone calls her Cora. You could always push to call her Coralie. I don't like super popular top 10 names because I had one of those and I hated being referred to by my last name. Or Megan without an h or whatever the teacher went with. And always having to specify. Now I don't come across too many. But my mom hates nicknames, like Meg. Omg she still looses it when people try to call me that. But if you love the name go with it. Also check your name popularity by state. I've found Florida's to be pretty different than the overall country's trend. Cora could be nowhere near the top in yours. Besides I think family names trump popularity.

  • Such a pretty name! I say go for it. I take popularity into consideration, but wouldn't if it was a family name.
  • I've never heard the name Coralie before, but I LOVE it! That's so pretty. I don't go for top 10 names either and I think Coralie is delightfully different, even if you call her Cora.
  • I think it's really pretty! And it's special because it's a family name. Would you regret not using it if you went with something else? If so then stick with it!

  • I love your name choice! Remember that trending names on websites where it shows that it's climbing in popularity just means more people like it. They may not necessarily make it a final choice. Our girl name had also gained in popularity, but I would have still chosen that name if this LO had been a girl.

Our boy name choice is one that's pretty popular now. I didn't want popular but it's the only name DH & I both liked. We are pairing it with a less common MN.
  • I love your name choice, very pretty! I say go for it.

  • Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the support. I'll definitely look it up by state, as I personally only know of 1 Cora (but a ton of Ava's, for example).

My sister and I have two super common names, and a well known but not super common maiden name. But when I think about it I never minded being called with a last initial, or by my last name. I only mind how difficult people seem to think my name is to spell because there are no y's... :)

  • It's a beautiful name, and was actually on our list for awhile.  So definitely go for it!
Popularity isn't what it used to be.  So even if it is somewhat popular there might only be one in her class instead of the 7 Amanda's in mine.  Nice part about naming children now everyone is trying to be different and making sure they don't have an as popular name.

  • I've said it in a different name post but babynamewizard.com is very useful. You can look up a names popularity through history up to 2013 I think. Among other things. It's a very addicting site and its free. I've loved my first daughters name since high school, never looked up its popularity when we chose it, now it's popping up everywhere! But I still love the name and it fits her so well I would choose it again. I also think Cora is a very pretty name!
  • I think it's a beautiful name! Go for it!
  • Yes, popularity is something we consider when trying to come up with names.  We have a very common last name too, and my husband is always flagged at airports (his parents picked the #1 name in his birth year.)  I really like the name McKenna but I'm worried that there's a few too many of them out there.  I really like Coralie though so if it's something you have your heart set on then maybe don't listen to me!

  • We automatically eliminate any names in the top 20 the previous year no matter how much we like them.  I was named the most popular name of my year and I hated having 4 of us in my class with the same name.  There isn't a name I love so much I'd do that to my kid.
