UTI

Has anyone been prescribed an antibiotic for a UTI? Which one is safe to take?

Re: UTI

  • If it was prescribed to you by a doctor who knows that you are pregnant, then it is safe to take. Your doctor wouldn't prescribe you something that could harm your baby with the knowledge that you are pregnant.

  • I've heard that most doctors won't treat during the first trimester... but ugh, the pain of a UTI is hard to bear. I try to drink a ton of water and cranberry juice to avoid getting one since they are more common during pregnancy and I've already had a couple before.

  • They prescribed me macrobid.
  • I prescribe pregnant patients macrobid also called nitrofurantoin for UTI. Once confirmed, UTIs should always be treated with antibiotics or can develop into some pretty serious complications.

  • Thank-you. They prescribed me Macrobid too. The PA was going to call it in, but she doesn't do OB and I wanted to make sure.

I've never heard of this before and I think it's wrong information. I had two with my last pregnancy, one around 9 weeks and one a little later on. Macrobid should be fine :)

  • I currently have a UTI and am on 250mg of something or other. I agree UTI's are more common in pregnancy, but I'm not sure the first tri thing is correct.
  • The risk of pyelonephritis is great so they usually treat even a symptomatic Utis. Speaking of which, I'm eight weeks and woke up with one this morning. Went to the doctor and got macrobid. It's a category B.
  • I am currently on Macrobid. My doctor called it in ND then told me that I had a uti. I didn't have any symptoms so I was very shocked. But if my OB prescribed it I think it's safe to take in fact when I went to get it from walgreens the counter girl had to check with the pharmacists to make sure o wouldn't have any side affects. I think you are safe to take it.

  • We are internet strangers. Why would you trust us over your own doctor who knows your pregnant?

  • I was just diagnosed with one. My Dr gave me amoxicillin. I'm bummed I have to take anything. I've been so good at pushing through head aches and back pain. But now have to take antibiotics. :(
  • Thanks for posting, I was diagnosed UTI yesterday and was little worried by the fact I have to take antibiotics. But it seems it's a common thing for prefers and antibiotics prescribed by a OB are ok. I can sleep better tonight. Thanks!
