Pregnant after a Loss

Prometrium Experience

The doctor just ordered prometrium for me to take orally every night until week 13?  I know everyone is different, but I was wondering what has been your experience on this.  She said no sexual intercourse while on it.  Is there a reason for this?  I understand if it was taken vaginally, but she said specifically orally.

My progesterone is low but not super low.  19.5 at 4 weeks.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Prometrium Experience

  • I was prescribed endometrin vaginally until 12 weeks, but sex was not prohibited at all. I haven't heard of those restrictions for the medicine. Could the restriction be for other reasons? The only thing taking it vaginally to know is wear panty liners, but no advice for oral intake.

  • Thanks for your comment. She went through everything on the phone with me and then I hung up. Then she had a nurse call me back within 2 minutes to tell me about the no sex thing. So I didn't get to ask.  I will ask at my appointment next month.

  • I was on prometrium orally for the first 10 weeks of my pregnancy, and my Dr also advised me against sex while taking it. If I remember correctly, he said that the extra hormones makes your cervix more sensitive to any aggravation. I don't remember it being immensely a big deal, but you are more likely to bleed and get infections while on it, says my dr.
  • Thank you @dottedwhearts777.  I haven't been able to find an explaination anywhere.

  • I'm currently taking prometrium (well, the generic form) orally, and they never mentioned the no sex thing to me. Hmmm, now I'm wondering...

  • I've taken it vaginally for four pregnancies. Never had a no sex restriction so maybe she has other concerns? My RE told me that vaginally is better than orally because it reduces the side effects. Even though I've had OBs prescribe it orally, I've just always taken it vaginally before bed. HTH

  • Thanks ladies.

It is a lot to think about.  My OB sounds like she is extra catious on many things.  Maybe this is another example.
