2nd Trimester

If your RH-?

I am RH- and I need to get Rhogam. My docs office is having me do an antibody screen when i am like 26 weeks. Is this normally done? also when did you get your rhogam shot? and did you have to pick it up from a pharmacy and then have your doc give it to you? was it covered by insurance? Mine insurance doesnt cover it and its $180. Also after delivery does the hospital give it to you? or do you need to pick it up from the pharmacy?

Re: If your RH-?

  • I've had 2 (one after each miscarriage) and each time my Dr. had them on hand at the office. So, no trip to the pharmacy, the nurse just gave it to me in the office.

  • Are you sure your insurance doesn't cover it?  That is ridiculous.  It isn't an optional shot.

I will get mine around 28 weeks and then in the hospital.  I am assuming that my Dr's office will have it on hand, they did not say anything about going to pick it up.

I have never had an antibody screen, it was just automatically given to me. I received a shot of RhoGham at 28 wks and again after I delivered, neither time did I have to go pick it up at the pharmacy. My insurance covers everything, so I really am not able to say, and again you will be given the shot after you deliver AT the hospital. Hope this helped you out a little!
  • I never had a screening for antibodies. I had the shot once at 8 weeks due to minor bleeding, again at 28 weeks and then after DD was born. The first 2 times I picked the Rhogam up at the hospital and took it to the Dr's office to have it administered within an hour. After delivery the nurses gave it to me. Mine was covered by healthcare but I'm in Canada.
  • If you've never been pregnant before I don't see why you'd need an antibody screening (but who knows, maybe you do). I'm sure mine is covered by insurance. It will be given by my midwife and they provide it. I'd call my insurance company and raise h#ll if I were you. That shot should absolutely be covered.

  • With DS I got my Rhogam shot at 28 weeks.  The dr.s office just had them there, there was no pharmacy involved.  My insurance covered it.

You will only get a 2nd Rhogam shot after delivery if your baby has a + blood type.  They will test and if your baby is - then you dont have to get another shot.  And I am sure your hospital keeps them there, so you wouldnt have to pick them up at a pharmacy then.

  • My DH is RH-, too, so I shouldn't have to worry about it.  Sorry - I know that's not much help.
