Pregnancy after Gastric Bypass

Anyone else other then me? I am 5 years out, down 206 pounds. This is my second pregnancy, the first we lost at 6 wks, no explanation. Now we're at a little past 8 wks. I feel like most days a Mac truck has hit me between the nausea and fatigue. Knowing I need extra nutrients, extra protein, twice the meals a normal person would eat it's so exhausting to keep up!! Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Pregnancy after Gastric Bypass

  • I have not had gastric bypass surgery, so I'm not much help there.  However, you don't need to eat twice the meals a normal person would eat.  At this point in time, my doctor has said to eat what I can and the baby will take the nutrients it needs because I'm also dealing with heavy nausea, fatigue, and dizziness.  Everything else I have read or been told is that you really only need an extra 300 calories a day while pregnant for awhile.  Hopefully that helps knowing you don't have to have such high expectations right now.

  • No advice on the gastric bypass part. But do not eat twice the meals a normal person would eat. At this point you don't really need extra calories.. During the 2nd trimester you'll need 350 extra and during the 3rd you'll need 450.. Which really is not very much extra at all!

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • jbatch and kbh- its different for women with gastric bypass. Since your body doesn't absorb a majority of the benefits/ nutrients from food after gastric bypass when you are pregnant after that type of surgery you do need twice the meals as a normal person- to get the right amount of nutrients.

A gastric bypass patient often has 4-6 small meals of about a cup of food (if they are well out from their surgery date that is, closer to surgery date its a smaller amount as the pocket is still quite "tight").

OP- have you spoken with your OB already about types of prenatals and supplements that might be available to you to help make sure you are receiving complete nutrition?  Many, maaaannnyyy women have happy, healthy very successful pregnancies after WLS- you can too! :)

Wishing you a Happy and Healthy 9 months!
PCOS- finally pregnant after 3 years of IF treatment, including 4 failed IUI.

Lucky IUI #5 currently growing in my belly!

  • Hi OP, I am 4 years s/p gastric bypass and have maintained my weight lose (for the most part). You know it gets tougher to maintain the further out you get. At this point, I am 6w2d, and am just focusing on a healthy lifestyle. I went back to my nutrition guidelines post op, when I went to what they called the lifestyle plan. It focuses on protiens, vegetables rich in iron, with limited carbs and sugars. I can say that I really haven't felt like I have had to do anything different at this point and don't really think about it as a factor of this pregnancy. Before I found out I was pregnant I was trying to lose the 8 or os lbs I had managed to put back on over the summer by enjoying myself a little to much!

I just focus on the fact that I am in such better overall at this weight then before surgery. My surgeon and OB both agree that the complications of obesity during pregnancy greatly outway the potential problems due to surgery and the way out bodies work.

Best of luck! H&H 9 months to you!

Maybe read the whole thread before giving out advice?  People who have undergone gastic bypass have strict dietary regimes they must follow, which need to be adjusted in pregnancy.

    Good luck, OP.

  • Thank you very much! The nausea has gotten much better making eating much easier. I have to see my gb surgeon Still in regards to being preggo. Just waiting on my blood work to come back

Meeeee!!!! Lol but forreal I am one of the people they tell you not to be like. I had my Ryn Bypass is February 2010 and got pregnant February 2011 with my DD. Everything was fine just make sure you drink lost of water and don't stop your B12 subliminal or injects plus your prenatal vitamins. This time around I am doing to same thing plus taking calcium because I cant drink milk sense the surgery and this pregnancy has my teeth feeling extra funny.

We just did our first trimester screening, they said all looks well... babies on point as far as growth and anatomy.  They did give me a new worry about the rising of the baby and possibitly of pushing through the mesh "cage" on my intestines causing them to tie off and die, which in turn will hurt the PH of baby.  I see it as a 3% chance of happening, they see it as a reason to put me on high risk! Follow up with OBGYN on Dec 1 & 29th and Jan 20th with Paranatal Speciailist! Lots of Luck to you!

  • @jlarcilla‌ Holy moly- that's a bit intense! FX that baby stays away from your intestines cage! Welcome to being high risk (ha)- stop by our check in any time- we are here for ya :)
  • Im 8.5 years post op and my OB has not mentioned anything to me about having any extra worries when ti comes to being pregnant. Just that I should stop my extra iron supplements since they were adding to the Morning Sickness. Maybe because i am so far removed I dont have to worry as much as you?? I also stopped seeing my Gastric Bypass doctor at 5 years post op.

Hope everyone has a happy and healthy last 8 months!
