Scared of not making it through the birth...

okay, so this story about this mom from Colorado dying during childbirth is just about the most terrifying thing ever. It's been all over my news feed on facebook. I'm terrified something is going to happen to me now. Rational fear, or am I just being a crazy Prego right now?

Re: Scared of not making it through the birth...

  • We all hear horror stories throughout pregnancy. And think, omg what if it happens to me. If you're healthy and baby is healthy, don't stress. Don't make something out of nothing. You'll be just fine!

  • Probably not a very rational fear in this day and age (unless you have some high risk factors)

try searching the child birth death rates, maybe statistcis would help ease your fears.

  • Eh, this falls under the category of "things you cannot control".

You should be more scared of driving in your car every day. Just chillax :)

  • I guarantee you do many more things everyday that are statistically more risky than giving birth.

  • I know rationally that odds are everything will be fine. My sister in law had a very scary birth with her son, so that makes me even more aware of the risks. Just to be safe, and because it is something good to have regardless, I am updating my living will and will in advance.
  • That is a sad story but try not to worry.

  • Wow, honest to God I've never considered dying in childbirth.

before I had DS I did sit my DH down to talk to him about what I want to happen if he is put in the position to make a decision about saving me or saving the baby (if it is a life or death decision for one or the other)....

he looked like a deer in headlights.

But you should have that conversation just in case, so he knows your wishes.

I said this to MH just a few weeks ago. He looked at me like I was crazy.

    ME:46 MH:44 DE IVF 2014
Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive.  Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)

    DE IVF #1 (4/26) BFN  DE FET #1 (6/4) BFP! Beta 1=339 Beta 2=852 Beta 3=9957 EDD 2/22/15!!

  • I thought about it with my daughter ... Then I decided to look up brain Anuerysms & pregnancy ( my mom had one) it was kind of scary and could have affected me but it didn't . In the end ... You have no control over what may happen ... Embrace your pregnancy & think positive. I am sure you will be ok ( I'm still here and going for round 2)

  • I agree with PPs. I don't worry myself over things out of my control.

Also this woman had a rare condition called amniotic fluid embolism. She chose to save her baby's life over her own. Still a very sad situation.
  • It can be scary to think about "what if," but the truth is that maternal death during childbirth is very rare in developed countries these days. That's why it makes it on the news - if it was common, it wouldn't be news. I would try not to worry about it too much. It never hurts to be prepared though - making sure you have a living will in place, a will, life insurance, etc. Doing that might give you peace of mind, as in "if the worst happens (which is reeeeally unlikely) my family will be okay because we've prepared for it."
